Feature – The Newlywed Game

The goal of The Newlywed Game is to see how each party answers one set of questions. They promised not to cheat (I believe them!) and sent us their answers separately. How many do you think they answered the same? Find out below!

1. Your song comes on in the grocery store. What’s playing?

Emily: We’ve been together so long that I feel like we’ve had a couple songs for different times in our lives. Right now I’m going to go with Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen.

Austin: It’s gonna be Dire Straits’ “Romeo & Juliet,” Springsteen’s “Thunder Road,” or Weezer’s “Buddy Holly.”

WIN! They both picked Thunder Road.

2. Our best date was…

E: Honestly, it’s impossible to pick one! I will always have a special place in my heart for the trips I would take to visit Austin in college (we did long-distance all throughout). Every time I came to Boston we would go to our favorite local Mexican place for dinner. My memories of that restaurant are wrapped up in the exhilaration of seeing him again after weeks and months apart.

A: In late 2016, we went to one of our longtime favorite LA diners, the Apple Pan, known for burgers, sandwiches, fries, and, of course, decadent apple pie à la mode. Over pie and ice cream we planned out the fundamental framework of what would become If I’m Being Honest. It was everything I love in our relationship—shared creativity, local restaurants, laughter, and apple pie.

I mean, they both sound like amazing dates. Now I’m hungry.

3. Our favorite meal to share together is…

E: Jon and Vinny’s in Los Angeles and Torchy’s Tacos in Austin, Texas.

A: Jon & Vinny’s, our favorite pizza (and cannoli, and bruschetta, and bread pudding…) place in LA.

Sounds like we need to visit Jon & Vinny’s when in LA next…

4. We are complete opposites when it comes to…

E: Literally my two favorite foods, cheese and avocado, Austin can’t stand! Conversely, Austin is a caffeine addict, and I hate coffee.

A: Coffee! I’m an enthusiast, Emily a hater! Otherwise, I enjoy doing new things and exploring new destinations, restaurants, etc., while Em enjoys her favorites and the comforts of home. We compromise, and it’s really nice. We’ve discovered new favorites together, and I’m grateful to recognize the joys of comfortable nights in.

Austin wins here…because coffee is life. jk

5. One ritual we’ve developed is…

E: Describing the plots of books we’re reading to each other. It keeps our runs from being complete torture, and it helps us both know about twice as many books than we could read on our own.

A: TV before bed. There’s no better way to wind down, but furthermore, it’s the perfect time and way to watch (and rewatch) long dramas. We recently finished Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries in our beloved before-bed binges.

These are both great rituals – and now that we know you’re #SPNFamily, we know you’re good people.

Solid similar answers here overall. You’d win the big prize on the show!

Review:

Always Never Yours is basically the most adorable, slowest burn romance YA I’ve read in fivever and now I’m just sitting here beaming because SO FREAKING CUTE.

Written by two high school sweethearts, I expected this to be an unforgettable romance but I had no clue the feels it would take through Megan’s complex family situation. This was an unexpected surprise that enhanced Megan’s story, giving her depth. Not that she wasn’t already a fully formed character, as an unabashed flirt and sex positive female directing (and starring in) plays while playing the Rosalind to everyone else’s Juliet.

Until she gets picked to literally play Juliet.

Megan’s story was cohesive, which I applaud Emily and Austin for. Not an easy task when you’re writing one POV, accomplished by Emily at the writing helm and Austin pacing the living room to problem solve. While Megan is the star of the book, readers will absolutely fall for Owen. He’s such a cinnamon roll. Boys, let’s aspire to be more like Owen.

I’ll be preordering To Be Honest! Check it out below.

High school senior Cameron Bright’s reputation can be summed up in one word: bitch. It’s no surprise she’s queen bee at her private L.A. high school—she’s beautiful, talented, and notorious for her cutting and brutal honesty. So when she puts her foot in her mouth in front of her crush, Andrew, she fears she may have lost him for good.

In an attempt to win him over, Cameron resolves to “tame” herself, much like Katherine in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. First, she’ll have to make amends with those she’s wronged, which leads her to Brendan, the guy she labelled with an unfortunate nickname back in the sixth grade. At first, Brendan isn’t all that receptive to Cameron’s ploy. But slowly, he warms up to her when they connect over the computer game he’s developing. Now if only Andrew would notice…

But the closer Cameron gets to Brendan, the more she sees he appreciates her personality—honesty and all—and wonders if she’s compromising who she is for the guy she doesn’t even want.
