Seventeen-year-old Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, nine weeks, and five days, and after what happened last time, she intends to keep it that way. Since then she’s lost eighty-five pounds, gotten four streaks of purple in her hair, and moved to the Buttcrack-of-Nowhere Ohio to help her mom escape a bad relationship.

All the girls in her new school want one thing – Jack Hunter, the Ice Prince of East Summit High. Hot as an Armani ad, smart enough to get into Yale, and colder than the Arctic, Jack Hunter’s never gone out with anyone. Sure, people have seen him downtown with beautiful women, but he’s never given high school girls the time of day. Until Isis punches him in the face.

Jack’s met his match. Suddenly everything is a game.

The goal: Make the other beg for mercy.

The game board: East Summit High.

The reward: Something neither of them expected.

Lovely Vicious (Lovely Vicious, #1)Lovely Vicious by Sara Wolf

[book rating = 5.0/5.0]

Have you ever had a book ninja attack you? I mean sneak up and just bite you squarely in your book-worm ass with its awesomeness? So I decided to load this book onto my phone in prep of reading it for my review, it was late 11:30 p.m. when I did so, and I thought…let me just read the first few sentences and before I knew it, it’s 3 am and I am bleary eyed, happy and stunned all at the same time.
It’s paragraphs like this that sucked me right in from the first few pages:

I pull my Florence and the Machine t-shirt lower to make sure it covers everything. Flaunting your stretch marks to the entire cool population of East Summit Hight School isn’t the best way to make influential friends. Or friends, period. I’d settle for either. Hell, I’d settle for an enemy at this rate. Without an anchor, the sea of high school is the shittiest ride in the world.

I loved every second of being inside Isis Blake’s witty, snarky brain. And Jack Hunter? (SCHWING)
In case you were wondering, Luke Grimes IS the Jack Hunter of my heart so there’s that

Seriously, I haven’t had a book character affect me like this in a hot minute. This book was funny, emotional, and offered a sardonic look at high school life. Isis was a riot, a former fat girl, dealing with the emotional fall back of a traumatic event. Like the stretch marks hidden under her clothes she hid her emotional scars behind a tongue as sharp as a pit viper. Her dialogue with every character in the book was practically a how to guide on effective sarcasm. Meaning it owned. However, it’s the scenes with Isis and Jack that are the beating heart of this story. If they were a breakfast cereal their tag line would be “snap, crackle and pop” because chemistry. The hatred these two had for one another turned into real deal feelings before either one knew what was happening. I loved reading how they both grappled with those confusing emotions.

The only thing the book had me questioning was the strong connection that Isis had to Kayla. For such a witty (outwardly) self-assured girl I didn’t take her for the type to get sucked into a friendship with such a seemingly artificial girl. Kayla was sweet for sure but I didn’t see what they had in common and never really bought into that friendship.

Finally, the ending! EGAD WHY…… Sara Wolf, call me you need to pay for my therapy bill stat.
Three and a half hours of late night page turning and bam! She ninja’s me AGAIN. Obviously, I cannot divulge what had me looking up a the ceiling at 3 am shaking my fist going NOOOOOO….! You’ll just have to see for yourself.

Excerpt

“I paid the fee, if that’s what you’re here about,” Madison starts. Jack looks to her, smile flashing on for a moment.

“Let me talk to her. Give me one second.”

“Okay,” Madison giggles. He grabs my elbow and pulls me in the other direction.

“Is that how you kissed me?” I ask, nearly tripping as he pulls me along. “Golly gee, it looks kind of mildly fucking embarrassing! No wonder up my appointments – ”

“Whoa, I think you overestimate me, shitlord. Last time I checked all I did was be in the wrong place at the right time. I saw you and had to – ”

“Stalk me.”

“ – delicately approach you. In a sideways manner. From behind. Without being seen at all. For ten minutes.”

“Why are you even out? I thought you were sick.”

“I was. See, it’s this thing called an immune system -”

He holds up his hand and rubs his eyes. “Okay, stop. Shut all systems down and just. Stop. Talking.”

“Why?”

“It’s annoying.”

“That’s never stopped me before!”

“Why did you follow me?”

“I was…curious?”

He looks down at the jar of frosting I clutch in my hands. “Are you eating that out of the can?”

“Are you the king of stupid questions?” I fire back. “Of course I am! Frosting is the ambrosia of the gods. God, if you’re into that religious thing. Are you religious? Somehow I get the feeling the only church you’d join is the church of self-worship. Your body is your temple. Work it, boy.”

“What are you saying?” He snarls.

“You’re blabbering!”

“At least I’m not whoring!”

“I’m working right now, okay? I’m getting paid. So you need to just piss off and go to whatever immature party you were going to in the first place.”

“How’d you know I’m going to a party?”

“The receipt for red plastic cups sticking out of your jacket. Your eyeliner. Girls don’t make eyeliner wings that big unless they plan on drinking.”

“Touché. You’re smarter than I gave you credit for.”

“And you’re far more annoying than I first suspected. If I’d known you’d stalk me like all the others, I never would’ve kissed you, even as payback.”

“Seriously, you kiss everyone like that though! It was nothing special.”

“Exactly. It was nothing special. So back off and leave me alone.”
