There are two inherent truths in the world: life as we know it is over, and monsters are real.
The Pestas came in the night, spreading their pox, a deadly plague that decimated the population. Kat, one of the unlucky few who survived, is determined to get to her last living relative and find shelter from the pox that continues to devastate the world. When it mutates and becomes airborne, Kat is desperate to avoid people because staying alone might be her only chance to stay alive.
That is, until she meets Dylan. Dylan, with his easy smile and dark, curly hair, has nowhere to go and no one to live for. He convinces Kat there can be safety in numbers, that they can watch out for each other. So the unlikely couple set off together through the barren wasteland to find a new life – if they can survive the roaming Pestas, bands of wild, gun-toting children, and piles of burning, pox-ridden bodies.
I really enjoyed World of Ash, it was an entertaining, fast read that had me excited and terrified the entire time. After I finished I sat back and said “WOW!” Shauna Granger’s writing was smooth and filled with emotion. The world was very believable and it scared me! A population decimating plague is post-apocalyptic enough, but then to be introduced to the Pestas, who are the creepy infectious disease spreading monsters, is down right freaky.
Kat was a great character. She was forced to survive anyway she knew, which wasn’t much from her pre-pox life of luxury, but she learned early on not to trust anyone. Sometimes that takes a major toll on your psyche, luckily she befriends a few good seeds, which are few and far between in this post-pox world. Her character really grows throughout the book and I loved reading that journey. Dylan is a rare one, he seems as if he’s been isolated from the things that go bump in the night. He definitely needs her more than she needs him. His naivety and her headstrong ways of being alone for the majority of the apocalypse makes for a good learning experience for them both. I would be an idiot not to mention one of the characters that was beyond my favorite, I won’t say much as this is going to stay as spoiler-free as possible, but Blue is just amazing. Gives this book just what it needed. Some comic relief as well as companionship. I think all three of them helped each other have that certain something to try and live for in a world full of hopelessness.
After I read World of Ash, I was enthralled, but then the more I thought about it I just felt like something was missing. To be honest, I wanted more; more conflict, more drama, more scary monsters! MORE PAGES! I always have a few issues with books, I guess I’m just that type of person, since I do it to TV and movies too. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad book or even a bad story, if it was I wouldn’t have rated it 4 hearts.
I always think about the end of days and what would I do, could I survive in the ‘new’ world? Not a big surprise but post-apocalyptic and dystopian are my favorite genres to read, and World of Ash is a good addition to the genre. I learned some good things I will store away to help me be more prepared for when that time may come. I am really hoping for a sequel, but I do plan on checking out Shauna Granger’s other series, Elemental.[book rating = 4.0/5.0]
Like so many other writers, Shauna grew up as an avid reader, but it was in high school that she realized she wanted to be a writer. Five years ago, Shauna started work on her Elemental Series. She released the first installment, Earth, on May 1, 2011 and has since released four sequels, with the series coming to an end with Spirit. She is currently hard at work on a new Urban Fantasy series, staring a spunky witch with a smush-faced cat named Artemis.
