Review
The first time I had a peek at this book was at San Diego Comic Con, when it sat beautifully behind glass at the Del Ray booth. And by beautifully, I mean torn cover, fair sticker, and general “worse for wear” condition. It was perfect, looking like those well loved books your mom and grandma had on their shelves.
Worlds Turned Upside Down gives you character profiles, a history of how the idea shaped from the minds of two brothers to studios, producers, and more creators, and background on just about every aspect of the show.
I especially loved how the book delved into small pieces, like the sound set for the upside down. It’s something so subtle but incredibly important in setting the tone for a scene – and I hadn’t thought about it with much definition before listening to this book! I love that there’s a group of people in this world who have to turn everyday sounds into our nightmares.
There was also a whole section on the creation of the demogorgon. The intricacy yet simplicity of the head design to how they created the length of its arms and the astounding height. Add to that creating the different phases of the lifeform – from tadpole to demo-dog into the monster encountered in season one and two.
The photos of the set plus the extras such as the map of Hawkins make this book a fun experience to look at.
I can’t wait for season 3, out this summer, and for Gwenda Bonda’s Suspicious Minds (the story of Eleven’s mother!). Just a few more weeks – February 5th!
