Comic Crush Saturday: September 22nd, 2018

Welcome to Comic Crush Saturday, our bi-weekly feature focused on the graphic elements of the book world. Comics became a huge part of my life a few years ago when I started reviewing them (and comic related TV shows) on Forever Young Adult. I’ve maintained a pulllist through my local comic shop, Isotope Comics, and even got Kelly to start one ;). You’ll find mini-reviews, what we’ve read recently, and more so check it out!

Eisner-nominated and New York Times bestselling thriller writer CHELSEA CAIN returns to comics with a new ONGOING SERIES! A mutation in Toxoplasmosis causes menstruating women to turn into ferocious killer wildcats—easily provoked and extremely dangerous. As panic spreads and paranoia takes root, the fate of the world rides on the shoulders of one twelve-year-old girl. Part Cat People, part The Handmaid’s Tale, MAN-EATERS will have everyone talking. From the creative team behind the Eisner-nominated series Mockingbird: writer CHELSEA CAIN, artist KATE NIEMCZYK, colorist RACHELLE ROSENBERG, letterer JOE CARAMAGNA, and joined by LIA MITERNIQUE, KATIE LANE, and STELLA GREENVOSS. This September… the cat wants in.

CHELSEA CAIN IS BACK and fuck yeah – she’s giving the patriarchy a slap in the face. Well deserved, since the neckbeard part of twitter drove her offline with their asshole ways. Man-Eaters is the most feminist thing you’ll read this fall so put.it.on.your.pull.RIGHT.MEOW (see what I did there?).

In Man-Eaters #1, women are being turned into dangerous cats due to a toxoplasmosis (you know, the disease you were warned about the first time you changed a cat box) mutation and they’re on the hunt. Stay inside, lock up your man…wait no, instead the girls are being locked up because they are ~~dangerous~~. Hormones are the enemy so the government floods the water with hormones to keep women from menstruating.

Shit, I didn’t even make it out of the first section. rawr.

What You Should Check Out Now

Last Comic Crush Saturday, we featured Check, Please and this week I met Ngozi in person. So many pie jokes (from me, because you can take the Supernatural fan out of the fandom but you’ll never take my PIE from me). If you have a chance to see her in person, highly recommend. She’s hilarious! Check out my tweets from the event here.

West Coast Avengers #1

Published by: Marvel

A NEW ERA DAWNS…AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! HAWKEYE (KATE BISHOP). HAWKEYE (CLINT BARTON). A guy named FUSE. Never have they ever been called “the big three” of...anything. And now here they are, reunited for, okay, well, it’s only the second time ever. Thank god they also brought AMERICA CHAVEZ, GWENPOOL and KID OMEGA. Wait. What? That’s right, it’s the new West Coast Avengers, son. And you better hope they can figure out how to save the world because BIG things are headed for the West Coast.

I was so so sad when we lost Kelly Thompson writing Hawkeye but we got something even better! Gwenpool! America Chavez! MORE KATE BISHOP! And it is so good.

Captain Marvel has Landed

Yeah so Carol is the best and I can’t wait for 2019. In the meantime, check out Margaret Stohl, YA favorite, writing her.

What We Can’t Wait For

Marvel’s What If series – What if Peter Parker turned Punisher after Uncle Ben died? Or if he used his spidey-sense for bad? Marvel is exploring some Twilight/Alice-level alternative universes and I am here for it.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – Sabrina the Teenage Witch goes darkside in this Netflix original based on the Archie-verse comic!

Best News of the Week

Adam Glass – yes, from Supernatural, is writing a comic with his son, Aidan Glass! Bringing Aidan into The Lollipop Kids means the teens will be written with authenticity, something important to the duo. I can’t wait for October!

Cover reveals galore!

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks

So if you’ve been hiding under a rock, you might have missed that Rainbow has been writing Runaways, a favorite of ours, for a while. Now it’s time for her to get her own story out there. Add Pumpkinheads to your TBR here!

TICK TOCK it’s almost time for Steel Prince but until then, Victoria Schwab keeps dropping these gorgeous covers on us like it’s no big.

(it is)

Which Steel Prince cover do you like better? Drop us a line and let us know!
