Comic Crush Saturday: September 7th, 2019

Welcome to Comic Crush Saturday, our bi-weekly feature focused on the graphic elements of the book world. Comics became a huge part of my life a few years ago when I started reviewing them (and comic related TV shows) on Forever Young Adult. I’ve maintained a pull list through my local comic shop, Isotope Comics, and even got Kelly to start one ;). You’ll find mini-reviews, what we’ve read recently, and more so check it out!

Featured Review of the Week

THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing.

Review

After taking part in the activations at SDCC, I knew I would watch this series. Eric Kripke, creator of Supernatural, is at the helm of this comic-to-screen port so that was also an easy way in.

R-rated superheroes that have gone full capitalism? It’s almost a little too real but here we are. The story plays on some powerful supes stereotypes – the aqua hero that’s basically only used for show, the over-the-top white and ripped hero who wears the US flag as a cape, the women who don’t truly have a voice but are expected to wear an outfit that is the opposite of practical.

And the humans who worship the heroes until the heroes use their privilege to harm them.

I like dark and gritty so the violence and tone were a fit for me. I always think about what would turn humans to vengeance and that’s what this story is all about. Losing a piece of yourself to privilege is the catalyst here and it is explored on several meta levels.

Will I watch season 2? Absolutely.

Based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Marie Lu, this graphic novel adaptation brings to life the dark mysteries behind the gates of Arkham Asylum. Nightwalkers are terrorizing Gotham City, and 18 year-old Bruce Wayne is next on their list.

Bruce Wayne is turning 18 and inheriting his family's fortune. But on the way home from his birthday party, he makes an impulsive choice that leads him to Arkham Asylym, the infamous mental hospital. There, he meets Madeline Wallace, a brilliant killer . . . and Bruce's only hope. Madeline is the mystery Bruce must unravel, but is he convincing her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees?

Bruce Wayne is proof that you don't need superpowers to be a superhero, but can he survive Madeleine's game of tense intrigue and deception?

This graphic novel adaptation from New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu and artist Christian Wildgoose is a dark, action-packed thrill ride!

It doesn’t matter that I own the hardcover and have read it…
