Feature: Crush On This #7

Crush On This is a new feature that highlights my love for books that don’t get as much recognition as I feel they deserve. I will try my best to hit every genre in order to be as diverse as possible. I’d also love your suggestions, so if you love a book and want similar titles, let me know in the comments!

Crush on This:

This week, I’m highlighting books that feature romance and mental health.

I know When We Collided was hugely popular, and I enjoyed it. But I didn’t ultimately love it. There were some issues I had with it and think it could have portrayed certain things better. But, if you’ve read my review of Eliza and Her Monsters, you know how much I adored it. It’s still my favorite book of 2017. And since it releases at the end of the month, I thought I’d feature it.

I found Eliza so relatable. And while I don’t suffer from anxiety or other metal health issues, it really was able to put things into perspective for me. I understood Eliza. But more importantly, it deals with other important topics. It’s brilliant. Add in the web-comic, IMs, etc and it becomes even more fun to read. Definitely one to pick up at the end of the month!

In the real world, Eliza Mirk is shy, weird, and friendless. Online, Eliza is LadyConstellation, anonymous creator of the wildly popular webcomic Monstrous Sea. Eliza can’t imagine enjoying the real world as much as she loves her digital community, and has no desire to try.

Then Wallace Warland, Monstrous Sea’s biggest fanfiction writer, transfers to her school. Wallace thinks Eliza is just another fan, and Eliza begins to wonder if a life offline might be worthwhile. But when Eliza’s secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she’s built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart.

With illustrations from Eliza’s webcomic, as well as screenshots from Eliza’s online forums and snippets of Wallace’s fanfiction, this uniquely formatted book will appeal to fans of Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona and Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl.
