Review: Dreamfall by Amy Plum
AHHH!!! I might as well have been trapped in the Dreamfall because I listened to this in a day. Devoured is more like it. I went into this not knowing quite what the full premise was and that turned out to be a delight as the suspense mounted. [book rating=5/5]Imagine waking up in someone’s dream. Now, imagine waking up in someone’s nightmare. Yeah, at least in your own dreamland, there’s a sense of familiarity and ability to get out. In someone else’s head, anything could happen. The only rule seems to me that if you die in a dream, you don’t get to come back. Eep.
A group of teens goes into an experimental treatment to cure them of insomnia. Their sleep is not one of peace, but one full of your worst nightmares and often fueled by things that have happened in their life. The only thing worse than being trapped in your own nightmare is being trapped in someone else’s, which is exactly what happens when a freak power outage happens during the experiment. It was fascinating to get to know the pasts and pieces of a character through how it manifests as a nightmare.
I got major Flatliners vibes here. Amy’s writing is so atmospheric and addictive. I could not stop listening, even though I was half terrified myself! We are shown the events through the eyes of two of the dreamers and one student observer. Tidbits are unfolded as the story goes on and let me tell you, you’ll be all GRABBY HANDS for book 2 at the end.
