Review: Dreamfall by Amy Plum

AHHH!!! I might as well have been trapped in the Dreamfall because I listened to this in a day. Devoured is more like it. I went into this not knowing quite what the full premise was and that turned out to be a delight as the suspense mounted. Check out my review below and be sure to check out the sequel, Never Wake, out in fall!

“Remarkable, riveting, disorienting and dark.” —Madeleine Roux, New York Times bestselling author of the Asylum series

A Nightmare on Elm Street meets Inception in this gripping psychological thriller from international bestselling author Amy Plum. Seven teenagers who suffer from debilitating insomnia agree to take part in an experimental new procedure to cure it because they think it can’t get any worse. But they couldn’t be more wrong.

When the lab equipment malfunctions, the patients are plunged into a terrifying dreamworld where their worst nightmares have come to life—and they have no memory of how they got there. Hunted by monsters from their darkest imaginations and tormented by secrets they’d rather keep buried, these seven strangers will be forced to band together to face their biggest fears. And if they can’t find a way to defeat their dreams, they will never wake up.

Dreamfall is perfect for fans of dark and edgy young adult novels from authors like Danielle Vega, Natasha Preston, Kendare Blake, and Madeleine Roux. It is the first book in a spine-tingling duology full of action, suspense, and horror that’s sure to keep readers on the edge of their seat until the very last page.

Review:

[book rating=5/5]

Imagine waking up in someone’s dream. Now, imagine waking up in someone’s nightmare. Yeah, at least in your own dreamland, there’s a sense of familiarity and ability to get out. In someone else’s head, anything could happen. The only rule seems to me that if you die in a dream, you don’t get to come back. Eep.

A group of teens goes into an experimental treatment to cure them of insomnia. Their sleep is not one of peace, but one full of your worst nightmares and often fueled by things that have happened in their life. The only thing worse than being trapped in your own nightmare is being trapped in someone else’s, which is exactly what happens when a freak power outage happens during the experiment. It was fascinating to get to know the pasts and pieces of a character through how it manifests as a nightmare.

I got major Flatliners vibes here. Amy’s writing is so atmospheric and addictive. I could not stop listening, even though I was half terrified myself! We are shown the events through the eyes of two of the dreamers and one student observer. Tidbits are unfolded as the story goes on and let me tell you, you’ll be all GRABBY HANDS for book 2 at the end.
