Feature: Our Favorite Halloween YA Reads

What do aliens, ghosts, zombies and an iconic creepy clown have in common? They all feature prominently in this years list of our favorite Halloween reads. So check out the picks we scared up for you this year and maybe read one today, preferably with the lights on….

Kelly’s Picks:

Some of these are not new, but then again when you read a scary book it will stay with you forever! I don’t read a lot of spooky books but what better way to spend Halloween then with some creepsters and spooks!

1) Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna #1) by Kendare Blake

annaI read this book back in October of 2011 – before we even had a blog! – and I still to this day recommend this spooky YA ghost story around this time to everyone that will listen! It was so unique and fun.

Category: Young Adult, Horror, Paranormal
Publication: August 30th, 2011; Tor Teen
Purchase: Amazon

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

Yet she spares Cas’s life.

2) A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis

MadnessThis book is more mystery than spooky, but it also solidifies what really is the difference between the sane & insane. Also, the scariest part was reading and acknowledging just how awful woman were treated in the early part of the century.

Category: Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Mystery
Publication: October 6th, 2015; Katherine Tegen Books
Purchase: Amazon

Grace Mae knows madness.

She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.

When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.

In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.zz-add-to-goodreads-button

Teresa’s Picks:

1) American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

americanpsychoHands down scariest book I’ve ever read. Not only because of the fact that the main character is a sociopath, who may or may not have a personality disorder…but because these types of people actually exist! This psycho thriller will have you double checking the locks on your house doors and windows, and not grocery shopping alone at night.

2) It by Stephen King

it_kingThis book was one of those books that was so creepy it left you feeling like you needed a shower. The obvious King of written horror (see what I did there? 🙂 ) has not failed us in this book. It was a little daunting to read with all of the flashbacks, but it was a book I gave away after I read it…because it freaked me out so much I felt like the cover was following me. And thanks to this book and subsequent movie, I always check my shower before getting in, and I absolutely HATE clowns.

Category: Adult, Horror
Publication: first published January 1st, 1986
Purchase: Amazon

The story follows the exploits of seven children as they are terrorized by an eponymous being, which exploits the fears and phobias of its victims in order to disguise itself while hunting its prey. “It” primarily appears in the form of a clown in order to attract its preferred prey of young children. The novel is told through narratives alternating between two time periods, and is largely told in the third-person omniscient mode. It deals with themes which would eventually become King staples: the power of memory, childhood trauma, and the ugliness lurking behind a façade of traditional small-town values.
