It’s Personal Saturdays with Kelly & Christy: Halloween Traditions

It’s that time of year, where costumes, candy, and the creepy and crawly come out to play! Halloween is a huge holiday and both Christy & I love it, so we thought we would share a little bit of how we celebrate the season, other than howling at the moon!

As far as traditions go, now that I am an adult and have no children, my favorite holiday is a tad more tame. These days I tend to do a little dress up for work and I watch Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Nightmare Before Christmas while handing out candy and trying to keep the dogs from losing their minds. Sounds like fun, right?

I definitely watch a whole slew of horror movies and of course Hocus Pocus (at least 2-5 times) lol. Some that I have to watch every year are Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Halloween, The Shining, and usually whatever else we conjure up. I also like to try and read some paranormal, horror, or fall filled books this month too! So far I have read the murder mystery White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig, the paranormal sci-fi Vengeful by Victoria Schwab, and the feminist retelling of Frankenstein, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White. I plan to read City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab this week. I also have to mention that I read the future release Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee by Jeff Zentner which is all about friendships and of course those awesomely bad, low budget horror movies!

As a young adult, I definitely participated in innocent acts on mischeif night (which I recently found out was a localish thing), we may have moved around neighbors lawn furniture and statues…maybe soaped some car windows in the past, maybe. I was also one of those kids who had a group of friends who still trick-or-treated until we were well into high school…because FREE CANDY! Thank goodness no laws existed then like they are trying to implement now to keep an age limit on trick or treating. I mean it is really quite dumb to use fines to stop teenagers from trick-or-treating, teens could be doing a whole lot worse with their time than innocently getting free candy.

So there you have it…my favorite holiday traditions from a young adult to today. What are you going to do this October 31st?

I don’t think there’s been Halloween where I haven’t dressed up. I absolutely love the opportunity to get in character (heck, I love every day cosplay!) so Halloween is just an absolute treat. Here’s a few of my every day cosplays in years past.

For 2018, I am putting by far the most effort into my costume than I ever have and I am pretty freaking stoked about it. We generally like to be out with our friends and this year we are going to a gaming (video and tabletop) night with our trainers-turned-friends.

Stay tuned ;).

  1. I used to dress up more. It was hit or miss in college and now it’s been a few years since I went down that particular cosplay rabbit hole. Now my traditions consist of decorating, reading spooky photos (though somehow I manage to read all the scary books in September, like this year with Not Even Bones and What the Woods Keep). And I have to watch Beetlejuice too, Labyrinth, Nightmare Before Christmas, and I really should add Rocky Horror in the mix. Been a few years since I watched it.

I usually go with my grandkids but this year they gave me their viral throat infection and I was home sick in bed. They were over it so they went to the local high school on Tuesday and then the Malloween for the 0-5 yr olds on Wednesday morning. It rained heavily here for the Trick or Treat times so good thing they went to those.

  3. Halloween is my absolute favorite. Since my daughter is grown (and lives 2 hours away now), we spend the evening at my bff’s house. There is usually about 15-20 people/kids there. We have food and hand out candy. This year we had jello shots. It was a lot of fun.

I’ve never done too much dress-up. I’d probably be too shy–I’d be leery of even doing something super wacky and outrageous like, you know, wearing a bow-tie or something!

Not big on Halloween but now that I have kids, I think I will make more efforts to get dressed up and go all out.

They’re trying to pass a law to age restrict trick or treating? How lame is that! I totally agree with you there! And I love those costumes Christy! You look so cute!! As for my halloween, this year I stayed at home with my parents and we turned off all the lights while my two younger teenaged siblings went trick or treating. I miss the free candy, but tbh it was nice to stay home this year and watch the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown early! ๐Ÿ˜›

I stopped trick or treating when the people in my neighborhood refused to give me candy because I was “too old.” The fact they thought there was an age limit to getting free candy made me quite upset. I agree that there are much worse ways to spend your time as a teen. I love that you still dress up. I dress up when we perform Halloween themed concerts in my band.
