New Release Review: All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

CAN A PERFECT LOVE SURVIVE A LIFETIME BETWEEN TWO IMPERFECT PEOPLE?

All Your Perfects, the newest New Adult romance book from Colleen Hoover was just released this week, and I was thrilled to be able to read and review for a part of this blog tour! Thank you to Atria Books and Colleen Hoover. My review was in no way influenced by their generosity. Check out Colleen Hoover’s remaining book tour dates below and get yourself to an event if you can!

All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

Category: New Adult, Romance
Publication: July 17th, 2018; Atria Books
Purchase: Amazon

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Ends with Us—whose writing is “emotionally wrenching and utterly original” (Sara Shepard, New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars series)—delivers a tour de force novel about a troubled marriage and the one old forgotten promise that might be able to save it.

Quinn and Graham have a perfect love story, but their unique connection is threatened by their imperfect marriage. The memories, mistakes, and secrets that they have built up over the years are now tearing them apart, day by heartbreaking day. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair. So do they risk it? Is their history worth saving?

All Your Perfects is a profound novel about a damaged couple struggling with a relatable issue – infertility – whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. In Colleen Hoover’s inimitable style and brilliant narrative voice, this heartbreaking page-turner asks: Can a resounding love with a fairytale beginning survive a lifetime between two imperfect people?

Review:

5/5 Stars

Man. I finished this book in under 3 hours, at around 2:30 in the morning. I haven’t consumed a CoHo book so quickly since Maybe Someday. It was a shock to me. I didn’t expect to be as invested as I was.

I don’t really ‘do’ women’s fiction. Probably because I don’t connect to the characters. I’m unmarried, childless, etc. So it’s almost impossible for me to attempt to relate to or understand the trials and tribulations the people in these stories go through. Most often, I’ll shelve books in this category under the “no thank you” file and move on. But, this is Colleen Hoover. And even if I haven’t loved every book she’s published, I think she’s a brilliant writer and at the end of the day, I will always give her stories a chance.

Up until this point, I could easily rank my favorite Colleen books:
1) Maybe Someday (impossible to be dethroned)
2) Hopeless
3) Losing Hope
4) Maybe Not
5) Finding Cinderella

I knew 100%, without a doubt that I may enjoy All Your Perfects well enough. But I was confident I’d probably rank it somewhere with the others.

I’ve had this eARC on my Kindle for weeks. WEEKS. Why? See above. Add to that an insanely long and rough book slump. Plus, the idea of a book about a failing marriage. Ew. No. So it sat. And then finally last night, I figured, “What the hell? I can’t sleep. I’ll just try a bunch of books until I pass out.” And then Quinn started speaking and I was hooked.

All Your Perfects has all of the elements of a Hoover story. Humor, adorable romance, quirky elements, etc. And, my favorite part: her lead men. This is what she does best. She doesn’t write the typical romance bad boys, billionaires, rock stars, or other cliche roles. No. She makes a man in an average/decent job desirable. She turned a fucking accountant into top book boyfriend/husband material.

But at its heart, this story is gut-wrenching. Heartbreaking. Emotionally exhausting. I can’t go in depth about what exactly has brought Quinn and Graham’s marriage to the damaged state it currently resides in without spoiling essentially everything. Just know that it’s refreshing to see an author tackle aspects that others don’t understand, experience, or sometimes even speak of. It’s truly eye-opening, especially for someone like myself. In no way is this an easy read. My heart was in my throat from beginning to end. I was sad. I was angry. And there was one or two parts that ALMOST got me to cry. I felt like I knew Graham and Quinn. I felt like I was part of their lives. The story alternates between past and present, so you get to watch them fall in love. And then you watch as their relationship continues to fall apart. I think that’s exactly why it hit me so hard. There are ups and downs. The past seems perfect and happy, so the reader is uplifted. Then it shifts to present day and the melancholy tone is enough to break your own heart. Back and forth this goes until you are tempted to skip to the end to see just how Hoover chose to end their tale. (I didn’t but I wanted to a number of times!) I’ve always admired Colleen’s gift of writing characters with minimal physical descriptions, but with so much personality that you cannot help but see them as real beings. She has brought Quinn and Graham to life and I’m positive I’ll never forget them.

I plan to reread this soon. Once I manage to process it all. But this time, I kind of want to read the past chapters first. Then, go back and read the present day ones. Obviously I’ll never know for sure, but I’m curious to see if the impact is different being read chronologically.
