Review & Event Recap: Slayer by Kiersten White

In every generation, there is a chosen one. For this generation, that chosen one is Kiersten White. She was chosen to continue the world of the Slayers and Watchers and evil that’s burdening both parties. I can’t tell you how FABULOUSLY she did this. Actually, I can. Check out some highlights from her event here and my glowing audio review!

Into every generation a Slayer is born…

Nina and her twin sister, Artemis, are far from normal. It’s hard to be when you grow up at the Watcher’s Academy, which is a bit different from your average boarding school. Here teens are trained as guides for Slayers—girls gifted with supernatural strength to fight the forces of darkness. But while Nina’s mother is a prominent member of the Watcher’s Council, Nina has never embraced the violent Watcher lifestyle. Instead she follows her instincts to heal, carving out a place for herself as the school medic.

Until the day Nina’s life changes forever.

Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.

As Nina hones her skills with her Watcher-in-training, Leo, there’s plenty to keep her occupied: a monster fighting ring, a demon who eats happiness, a shadowy figure that keeps popping up in Nina’s dreams…

But it’s not until bodies start turning up that Nina’s new powers will truly be tested—because someone she loves might be next.

One thing is clear: Being Chosen is easy. Making choices is hard.

Review & Recap

Just when you think Buffy can’t get any better and then Kiersten White comes in and blows us all away with her amazing follow up based on THE WATCHERS. Plus Madeleine Maby brought Nina to life with her rich narration. I loved her different voices and inflections!

Yes, The Watchers. Yes, it’s a book called Slayer. Yes, these two intersect.  That’s not a spoiler – it’s literally how this book goes from zero to amazing in no time.

Post season 7, the world is rife with slayers. Anyone and everyone who ever could be a slayer will be awakened at the first need to protect themselves. The Chosen One(s). You can only imagine what it’s like over in Watcher land now.

This is what any discussion about Buffy looks like

Now also imagine you’re a Watcher from a line of Watchers…And your dad was Buffy’s first Watcher. Was. You might just have some feelings about Buffy and Slayers.

Let’s complicate that by also making you the LAST Slayer to ever be awakened and you’re now right into the thick of it.

You know, I love Nina. I love how she’s processing this world she was born in. I love how she’s content healing people rather than being center stage. Watching her come into herself as a Slayer while having to confront her feelings? I wanted to hug her. Gift her some long term therapy. Maybe make some hot cocoa.

There wasn’t a minute this story wasn’t moving. I mean, there’s still evil in the world and the Slayers (and Watchers) are out there confronting it on the daily. I love that Kiersten catches you up (uh, I watched this show from the day it started so it’s been a minute since I watched it) and that new fans won’t be lost because this isn’t a Buffy-centric novel.

Kiersten captures the humorous, character driven show with perfection. It’s feminist and badass. I’ve read other IP projects in worlds I love and nothing comes close to this. And yes, there’s a bad guy and I’m here for it. Can’t wait for book two!

This was before she saw the Riley tweet. She may never forgive me.
