Alice had her whole summer planned. Non-stop all-you-can-eat buffets while marathoning her favorite TV shows (best friends totally included) with the smallest dash of adulting--working at the library to pay her share of the rent. The only thing missing from her perfect plan? Her girlfriend (who ended things when Alice confessed she's asexual). Alice is done with dating--no thank you, do not pass go, stick a fork in her, done.

But then Alice meets Takumi and she can’t stop thinking about him or the rom com-grade romance feels she did not ask for (uncertainty, butterflies, and swoons, oh my!).

When her blissful summer takes an unexpected turn, and Takumi becomes her knight with a shiny library employee badge (close enough), Alice has to decide if she’s willing to risk their friendship for a love that might not be reciprocated—or understood.

Review

Let’s Talk About Love was a groundbreaking book for me as it was the first major character I’ve read that was not only asexual and biromantic, but also Black. I felt Claire Kann put all these identities first and foremost and I really loved the way all the intersectionalities came together throughout the story. There is strong identity and diversity throughout. It was seriously so good to read those aspects in such a positive light.

Alice is a fun and quirky character who works in a library. She has an amazing group of friends and their part in Alice’s life is very important. There is a whole cast of minor characters and they are filled with queer and BIPOC folx. The story is both light and heavy, and Alice’s character is so relatable, even though I do not have her same representations (I do consider myself queer/panromantic if you didn’t know).

So…I absolutely loved the attraction with Takumi. Takumi was so supportive of Alice’s identity and just an overall kind person. I really can’t express how important it was to have the love interest be completely accepting of Alice’s identity.

Let’s Talk About Love tackles serious topics, and I admired the fact that it is both fun, cute, and quirky, but also raises awareness. This is a story about love and the evolution of what love means.

Content Warnings: Racism, Bullying, Acephobia, Assault.
