Guest Post: Scenes to Watch for in
The Darkest Minds Movie

With The Darkest Minds movie adaptation releasing this week we have brought on Ri, of Hiver et Cafe, to talk about her favorite book, The Darkest Minds and the scenes you want to watch for in the movie! I’m seeing the movie this weekend and will report out on which scenes were included!

Hello! I’m Ri of Hiver et Cafe! I’m based out of Toronto and I’ve been blogging since 2014 and I named my blog after two of my favourite things: winter and coffee. I’m a consumer of tv and movies, a lipstick hoarder, a perfume enthusiast, a bit of a foodie and of course, a reader. Of mostly fantasy.

I’ve been called upon to talk about The Darkest Minds (one of my favourite books of all time) and the scenes you should watch out for when you go to see the movie! Now, I don’t have any insight into the movie so I can’t guarantee that any of these are actually in the movie as they are, but we can only hope that the scenes I will be talking about (some of my favourite scenes) do end up in the movie.

I haven’t read this book in a long time and also surprised myself when I pulled it off the shelf to see SO MANY TABS in this book!! I was very curious to see what younger me tabbed in this book. Like is it just kissing/Liam scenes? Or are there more poignant scenes tabbed as well?

ANYWAYS, Let’s get on with it. In no particular order, here are the five scenes that you should look out for (and also happen to be my favourite) while watching this movie! Mild spoilers in this post for anyone who intends to read the book still.

1. The entrance of our illustrious Black Betty crew.

What’s better than a kickass entrance? Ruby meets the crew as she’s escaping from the sketchy Children’s League. When we meet Zu, Chubs and Liam in the first scene they’re in, we immediately get to see the personalities of these characters who we grow to love. Zu is the sweetheart and doesn’t speak a word. Chubs is pragmatic and has a heart of gold. Liam is kind of the leader and just a kind, good dude. They immediately make a huge impression and of course, they become a major part of this book.

2. “Time to Carpe the Hell out of this Diem.”

This line is probably one of the most memorable and iconic lines from The Darkest Minds. It’s become well known in the fandom and is spoken by Liam in an almost kind of unmemorable moment in comparison to other scenes. However, because the line is just kind of so upbeat and Liam, it’s definitely made an impression upon fans of the book and I sincerely hope that it’s made it into the film.

3. That™ scene

I don’t think I can talk about The Darkest Minds and “scenes you should watch out for” and not talk about That™ Scene. If you’ve read the book, you know what i’m talking about, y’know, the one near the end. It’s a tear jerker and really tore at my feelings. This scene ruined me. You can get a preview of it here in this voiceover trailer by the wonderful Harris Dickinson portraying Liam. It seems all positive and joyful. . . but it’s A Lot™. I get chills listening to this voiceover.

4. “Crackers, Yesssss”

This is a great moment between Ruby and Liam that’s swoony and really shows both of their characters. Liam holds Ruby’s hand and as she’s afraid of others’ touch in fear of accidentally slipping into their mind, she tries to pull back her hand, but Liam’s all like “Nope. Mine now.” It’s a tension filled scene between Liam and Ruby and then the lovely Chubs breaks this tension by sleep talking “. . . .crackers. . . yes.” It’s probably one of my favourite scenes from the book since it shows the palpable chemistry and tension between Liam and Ruby as well as further information about Chubs.

5. The reveal of Ruby’s powers.

One of the first things we learn about Ruby is that she has the mind control powers that are categorized as “Orange”. However, because she has these powers, she messes with the person who categorizes her into thinking she’s a Green. Of course after she escaped, she’s kept her secret in fear that she’s going to hurt others. When her powers are revealed to the others of the Black Betty crew, it’s an epic moment and a pivotal moment for Ruby herself as she makes the decision to protect her friends with the understanding that they may be afraid of her afterwards.

So clearly not all of those tabs were just Liam/kissing scenes. Though to be fair, a good number of tabs were just Liam being a total charmer scenes.

I am so excited to see this movie and to see the characters brought to life. Amandla is a wonderful actress, and I really enjoyed Harris Dickinson’s previous work in FX’s Trust. I really hope to see the scenes I mentioned in the movies because these are really just some of my favourites.

Did I miss anything? Let us know! Spoiler warnings please!

Thank you so much to Christy and the lovely ladies of Bookcrushin for having me here on the blog!

Happy Reading!

  1. I am one of the few that has not read this series, but the movie sparked my interested. Ill probably pick the series if I like the movie..though they dont always make books justice.

  2. Wonderful guest post! I haven’t read the book in MANY years, but this post definitely reignited my memory. I now understand why Ruby is fading in so many of the promo shots! Even if the scene where “Time to Carpe the Hell out of this Diem” isn’t the same, I hope they include the line somewhere in the film.
