TV Thoughts: The Passage – s1e5 – How are You Gonna Outrun the Rest of the World?

Welcome to TV Thoughts! We are kicking off this new feature with our thoughts on the newly adapted book to TV show, The Passage. Kelly actually read The Passage by Justin Cronin back when it was released in 2010. She did not however finish the series…you know what they say about big books, well, she is the opposite book nerd. But seriously, she started a YA focused blog, so reading adult books was not at the forefront of her priorities. So here we are!

The Passage – S1E8 – You Are Not That Girl Anymore – 3/4/19

Synopsis:

As Amy experiences symptoms of the virus that indicate she is close to turning, Brad brings everyone together; Lila and Sykes race to perfect an anti-viral medicine; Richards tries to keep Project NOAH contained. (@FOX)

The Passage airs on FOX on Mondays at 9pm EST. Or buy Amazon

If you’ve been sitting on The Passage, now is the time to catch up. How are You Gonna Outrun the Rest of the World is solid and I can’t wait for next week’s ep.

I don’t have the full context of the story so occasionally I pick Kelly’s brain. We always knew that the entirety of the world would become infected and it was only a matter of how. One day you’re trying to cure incurable diseases and the next day you’re acknowledging that you’re over your head and – shit – you can’t contain the vampires. YES, they’re finally saying it. That’s how you know things are getting dire.

What continues to make this show incredible is the chemistry and talent in the cast. It’s the little moments, like when the obviously disconnected director tells Amy she’s getting an A for medical experimentation and she responds with, “They don’t put letter grades on a medical test.”

Zing.

We also have some interesting ethical science scenarios. Like the guy who says, “what’s the worst that can happen in 30 seconds?” as they’re linking him to the brain waves of a serial-killer-turned-vampire. I think you’re about to find out, friend. It was nice knowing you.

One awkward kiss (anyone else? Just me?) and a double play later and we are just about at the point where Fanning and Lear are going to face off. I do wonder why the creative team added in Fanning when Babcock was the star of the books.

Oh, and Amy going all X-Men on us? I’m here for it.

An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy—abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape—but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world.
