In the heart-pounding conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Diabolic series, the Empire teeters on the edge of destruction as rumors spread that Nemesis is still alive.
Three years ago, Tyrus Domitrian shocked the galaxy by killing the woman he swore to love forever. The woman for whom he upended the Empire. The woman with whom he wanted to build a new and brighter future.
Now, the once-idealistic heir apparent has become the cruel Emperor Tyrus, wielding his authority with an iron fist, capable of destroying planets with a single word, controlling all technology with a simple thought. He has bent the Grandiloquy to their knees, and none has the power to stand against him.
But there is a muttering among the Excess. They say that Nemesis is not truly gone. They whisper of her shadow spotted in distant star systems. They say that Nemesis lives. That she will rise, and rally the people to topple the man who was once her truest love—and is now her fiercest enemy.
Interview with S.J. Kincaid
When you first launched The Diabolic, it was meant to be a standalone. Now we are here talking about the third and final book. What’s been the most rewarding part of this journey?
The most rewarding part of this journey has been seeing out the character arcs of both Tyrus and Nemesis from the beginning to the end. I was inspired by the BBC miniseries I, CLAUDIUS, to write this book but it was impossible to capture the entirety of the scope of the story I wanted to write in a single story. I was so glad to have an amazing editor, and enthusiastic readers willing to follow the story all the way to the ending so I could truly write my scifi reimagning of a classic.
What are you most excited for readers to experience in The Nemesis?
Ooh, very tricky to say directly. Let’s just say, people who have enjoyed the twists in the previous stories should also enjoy the TWIST in THE NEMESIS!
What would your characters from the Insignia trilogy do if they were dropped in the world of The Diabolic?
My INSIGNIA characters would be deeply annoyed that many of the mistakes of the past they’ve liberated the world from have been repeated once more in THE DIABOLIC, and Tom would grouse about going to change it, Vik would advise caution, Wyatt would explain at length how cycles of history repeat themselves, and Yuri would say something deeply, and inappropriately optimistic, and somehow at the end of it all, they’d come up with the absolutely perfect plan for resolving everything– but alas, THE NEMESIS would already be done and over, and because aha! It will not be easily predicted according to my own personal plans.
