[book rating=4/5]The Duchess Quest is the story of Dainy, the lost Duchess of Jordinia, and the merry band of misfits that is sent on a quest to find her. Fifteen years ago she escaped execution but now she must survive harrowing travels among the troublesome trio charged with taking her home.
When I first read the blurb and premise of this story, I immediately told Kelly I would read it. My mind went wild with the possibilities that this story could hold. After reading it I would say that there are good and not so good parts to this story.
I will start with the parts that didn’t work for me. For starters, an unfortunate distraction throughout the book was the constant changing of the dialogue style by the characters. I think the goal was for this to be written like more of a period piece with the “Nay,” and “Good sir” peppered through the dialogue. The problem is that it is not consistent throughout the whole book. You will have pages of normal conversation, and then it will change to period speak. For me it seemed out of place and a little forced.
On the flip side, the story itself has a good premise with some cool plot twists (although sadly I predicted a few). This is a quick read, which is good for a fun and fast story. The characters are not too deep, and their changes are pretty easily seen. The main character is eighteen and endures a little bit of high school drama and of course there is some love and a happy budding romance that is sure to put a smile on your face. There is a lot of fast paced, witty back and forth from all parties, which sort of reminds me of a literary version of Gilmore Girls. (One of my favorite shows!) There were quite a few times my husband asked me why I was laughing at my kindle. 🙂
Overall this is a charming book that is a fun and quick read. If you are a fan of Anastasia you will be thoroughly entertained by the fun escapades of Dainy and her entourage.
All in all I give this book a 4 out of 5.
