Honor student, manager at the campus coffee shop, owner of an impressive sweater collection – Melanie Wilder has it all together. Then John “John Boy” Walden strolls into her life wearing nothing more than an impish grin and all-too-revealing loin cloth.

Soon, make-out sessions replace homework, lust triumphs over work. And to further crumble her perfect world, an unexpected phone call threatens to take away everything she’s worked for.

Now, as Melanie struggles to pick up the pieces, she realizes that John may be the only one to put her life back together…unless he shatters it first.

**This is not a sequel to The Only Exception. It’s a companion novel with two characters from the first book. You don’t need to read The Only Exception to understand this book.**

Review:

The Only One is another addition to the New Adult genre. A quick, breezy style it had all of the elements that make for a fun romantic read. For starters, it had the ubiquitous alpha male. I have to say that I am not a fan of frat guys in general. It’s just not the type of guy that I’ve ever been attracted to but John “John Boy” Walden had many layers and I found myself secretly rooting for him, chiseled abs, and all. When we first meet him, in an, ahem…loin cloth I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make a connection but his almost knightly overtures had me singing a different tune. Unfortunately, Melanie the protagonist of the story was a major sore spot for me. At first, I was excited because the first scene with Melanie she is rocking a Hermoine costume and was described as a bit of a book worm but from there I just lost connection with her. When she receives some life altering news (kudos to the author for bringing attention to this sensitive issue) her behavior towards John became a bit melodramatic and I found myself questioning why John was so into her to begin with. I realize that this was part of the drama of the book but I wish there was a bit less of it and more of some of the sweet bonding scenes the two shared. Her self pitying sort of became redundant and her constant laments of being broken became tiresome. I will say that I appreciated how the romance unfolded as it wasn’t as rushed as I’ve seen in some other NA novels, yes there was an  insta connection but it felt genuine.  I appreciated the drawn out sexual tension even if in the end I didn’t quite feel what I would deem a passionate love between the two.

I will say that I am super intrigued to go back and read the The Only Exception, which introduced Trey and Monica. They are featured heavily in this book and now more than I ever I cannot wait to delve into their story.

While I may not have been a Melanie fan I ended up having a good time reading this book. Fans of new adult and of course strong but tender alpha males will eat this one up and if you need some other reasons check out this top ten list below!
