First Lines Fridays: May 6th, 2016

It’s First Line Friday! For today, I’m giving you two lines so you can get the full sense of the drollness. Ready?

About:

Each week I will pick a YA or NA book from my shelves and copy the first line, in an attempt to acquaint you with some new reads or reintroduce you to old favorites. We will have an accompanying Instagram pic to go along with our choices each week so check out #firstlinesfridays!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? If you want to join the meme be sure to check out Wandering Words, and here are her rules below.

The rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (or your current read) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
  • Finally…reveal the book!

“OMG, girlie! I loooove your hair!”
Face: Drunk girls are fascinated by curly hair.

These lines are from Use Somebody, by Riley Jean. This is a funny, rich, heartbreaking, and ultimately redemptive friends-to-more story that left me shattered and rebuilt. I love this book, which is saying a lot because I am usually not a fan of contemporary romance (and you can check out my review here). Honestly, though, I wouldn’t even classify this as anything other than an amazing, must-read novel. And this is Riley’s debut novel. Debut! She is incredibly talented and I look forward to whatever she publishes next (to the point where I might sort of hound her. She’s such a good sport.).
