This week’s First Lines Fridays is from a book near and dear to BookCrushin’s heart. Both Kelly and I know and love the author of the book, and we adored this book (and its sequels). Ready?

About:

Each week we will pick a YA or NA book from our shelves and copy the first line, in an attempt to acquaint you with some new reads or reintroduce you to old favorites. We will have an accompanying Instagram pic to go along with our choices each week so check out #firstlinesfridays!

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? If you want to join the meme be sure to check out Wandering Words, and here are her rules below.

The rules:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (or your current read) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
  • Finally…reveal the book!

Here is the first line. Check out our instagram too!

And the book is . . .

The Forgotten Ones by Laura Howard! This YA novel tells the story of Allison, whose mother suffers from a not-quite-normal version of schizophrenia. Her world is turned upside by the return of her long-lost father, who assures her that he can heal Allison’s mother and that, hey, by the way, the Fae are real. I devoured this book in one night and had trouble re-emerging from the world Ms. Howard creates. And Ethan? Sa-woon.

The best part is that The Forgotten Ones is perma-free! Grab your copy here.

Allison’s plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she’s been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison’s mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn’t trust her father, so why would she believe his fairy tale about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother’s sanity.
