Salvaged Soul (The Ignited Series #3) by Desni Dantone

Category: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

Life in paradise isn’t exactly what Kris thought it would be. Treated like a prisoner and forced to keep her romance with Nathan hidden, she struggles to adapt to island life with the Kala. Worse, her specialties are coming in faster than she can control, and she fears the Skotadi within her will soon win the battle for her soul. Her only hope is to embrace her Incantation lineage, master the skills she’s supposed to have, and free herself of her destiny. If only she could figure out how to do it…

The ghosts of Nathan’s past still inhabit the island. Adapting to the Kala way of life again is something he will grudgingly accept, as long as they agree to help Kris. But falling back into the Kala system means being a Kala soldier, and when the gods ask for help, he cannot refuse. Sent around the world on a mission, he faces new dangers and stumbles upon a startling discovery that could change everything…

Together, they face their biggest hurdle yet and put their relationship to the ultimate test. When old temptations arise, new enemies emerge, and emotions run high, can their love survive?

From Amazon’s bestselling author, Desni Dantone, comes the third installment of The Ignited Series, where the danger is real, the stakes are higher, and nothing is what they thought. Continue the journey with Kris, Nathan, Alec, and Callie as they discover that when friends become enemies, enemies become friends, and the battles lines between good and evil blur, choosing the right side isn’t always easy.

Dual Review:

Ignited & Sacrificed

[book rating=4.0/5.0]

“Ignited” by Desni Dantone tells the story of 17-year-old Kris who, at the beginning of the book, has survived a car accident thanks to the intervention of Nathan, a “guardian angel” who has been miraculously saving her life since she was a toddler. Kris knows nothing of this man, except that he occupies her dreams and her sketch pad, and has an uncanny knack for showing up when she most needs his help. We are also introduced to Kris’s best friend Callie, Kris’s bubbly support system, and Alec, a brooding, messy-haired bad boy who takes an immediate liking to Kris. When Nathan shows up again to rescue Kris from a seemingly non-dangerous situation, she starts to learn that things in her life are more complicated – and dangerous – than she originally suspected.

The book started out just a little bit slowly for me but, once Alec arrived on the scene, the pace picked up and I became invested in the story and the characters. I like Kris as the protagonist; she is snarky and intelligent, and loyal to the people in her life. I also like Nathan, who is quiet, strong, and focused. But the character I love the most is Alec, the tortured bad boy with the heart of gold who loves Kris and is struggling with the ultimate definition of “internal demons.” The tension between Kris and Alec is palpable, and the tension between Alec and Nathan is hysterical.

The story was action-packed once it got rolling and contained plenty of twists and turns. The explanation for who Kris actually is was surprising and unique, and the conflict it causes is genuine and emotional. It’s a strong conflict, one which will carry through the rest of the series without feeling like it’s getting old.

“Sacrificed” picks up pretty much right where “Ignited” ended, with our intrepid cast of characters staking out a warehouse of bad guys. In this book, we are introduced to the Boy in White, about whom Kris has been dreaming; we learn his identity and his purpose in Kris’s life, which makes her cringe. The action is elevated in this story, and the relationships between the characters deepen. Kris and Nathan drove me crazy with their “we want to be together but we shouldn’t be together” relationship parameters, but those are pretty standard in this genre and probably don’t annoy teenage readers as much as adult readers. The love triangle continues in “Sacrificed” but I actually didn’t mind it; Kris was pretty solid in her convictions about who she loves and, while that wavered a bit, it was never irritating. In fact, a few of the scenes between Kris and Alec made me tear up, and my heart broke a tiny bit.

The writing was vivid in both books and I had no trouble picturing everyone and the locations within the story. The humor and sarcasm were abundant, the characters were layered, and the mythical/supernatural elements were fresh and combined my love of history with my love of fantasy.

Ignited and Sacrificed: Both 4/5 stars. Inventive, interesting, with likeable characters; the copies I received needed some editing but that could be because they are ARCs. I’m excited for the next book to be released and look forward to continuing Kris’s journey!

Quotes:

I blew out a puff of air. “Is there anything in this school that doesn’t spread like a wild fire?” (Kris)
“It’s high school. Gossip is all we have.” (Callie)

I wanted to know who those guys were, and why they were trying to kill us, but I big my tongue…I knew I wouldn’t get an answer. Not while Nathan was in his man-on-a-mission mode. (Kris)

“You learn that in the Boy Scouts?” I was impressed, though he wouldn’t be able to tell through all the sarcasm. (Kris)

“I wasn’t a Boy Scout.” (Nathan)

Yeah, no kidding. I was pretty sure they taught manners. (Kris)
