Seventeen-year-old Julia Wright doesn’t understand her friends’ obsession with boys. She’s never even had a crush, and proudly maintains her composure no matter who is in her presence. In fact, the hotter a guy is to her friends, the more annoying he seems to Julia. When she is blackmailed into being the manager of the men’s swim team, she finds herself face to face with the worst of them all.

Team Captain Vander Thelxinoe is the typical self-assured jock, with a not-so-typical ability to change people’s minds at will. It’s a talent he uses often to get what he wants–only his charms don’t work on Julia. Now he’s anxious to figure out why, and the closer he tries to get, the more desperate she is to stay away–especially when he somehow awakens a side of her she never knew existed.

Their unexpected friendship puts Julia in the middle of a quest she doesn’t quite understand. As her familiar world begins to unravel around her, Julia must partner with the one person who knows how to push her buttons–and, in doing so, discovers the unbelievable truth about who she really is.

Can Julia and Vander survive the trial set before them, or will they succumb to a more terrifying fate?

Review:

[book rating=4/5]

Julia Wright has never been your normal teenage girl. She has never been boy crazy or tried to sneak a peak at the opposite sex, no matter how nice their abs may be. Vander is the perfect specimen of a teenage male. Captain of the swim team and hometown hottie, he has never had to work at getting his way. Until Julia. When these two lifelong classmates find themselves in an awkward situation working together may be their only chance at survival. Especially when you’ve pissed off a powerful goddess. Can these two figure out how they are tied together? Can these two rivals work together?

Trial by Charm is the first installment of the Charmed Trials Series by author Jolene Buchheit. We are introduced to Julia, your not so typical teenage girl and Vander, the pretty boy who has an uncanny way of making people do what he wants. So, what does he do when he finds out that Julia is able to resist his charms? All men like a little chase right? 🙂

This book is what I would call light greek mythology fantasy. We meet some fun players in Greek Mythology. It was interesting to see how Buchheit spun the tales in a way that makes it accessible to a younger audience. There were a few unseen twists and turns that made this book very enjoyable to read. If you are a fan of Percy Jackson, this book is definitely for you! This is absolutely a book that you can read with your teen. I would say that this book is great for a fun and light read. There were a few heavily emotional scenes, but the overall tone of the book is light and hopeful. The pace was steady and easy to read, with action coming at good intervals. The balance of this book was nice. Overall it was a pleasure to read.

If you are looking for something new to put on your summer TBR, you should pick up this book when it becomes available on April 27th!

All in all I give Trial by Charms a 4 out of 5!

Happy reading!
