Kody Keplinger’s popular coming of age novel could be coming to a theater near you in 2013. CBS films acquired the rights to the screen adaptation earlier this year with Josh Cagan, who is best known for the movie Bandslam, having written the screenplay and McG (Charlie’s Angels) set to produce. When doing a search of upcoming 2013 romantic comedies Movieweb.com lists The D.U.F.F as a 2013 release! True the film is still listed as “in development” on IMDB but having a studio, screenwriter, producer and director attached is a very good sign. I personally wish that someone like Diablo Cody would adapt the screenplay because I feel like she would have a much more satirical take on this novel and would nail the biting and cynical Bianca aka “The Duff”. In addition, with all the paranormal teen books that have made, and are making their way to the big screen, I long for the days of the traditional teen romance/comedy such as She’s All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Bring it On. For more on The D.U.F.F. see my review here and the Goodreads synopses below.
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.
But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.
Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.
