Book Rewind Review: Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power!

This year, Kelly and I are hitting the backlist hard. We have so many unread books in our libraries so we committed to Beat the Backlist and today marks the kickoff! Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! was such a fun read and I can’t wait to read The Moon is Up, which is on my backlist. Check out why this series is great for your backlist reads!

Welcome to Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. The five scouts of Roanoke cabin—Jo, April, Molly, Mal, and Ripley—love their summers at camp. They get to hang out with their best friends, earn Lumberjane scout badges, annoy their no-nonsense counselor Jen . . . and go on supernatural adventures. That last one? A pretty normal occurrence at Miss Qiunzella’s, where the woods contain endless mysteries.

Today is no exception. When challenge-loving April leads the girls on a hike up the TALLEST mountain they’ve ever seen, things don’t go quite as planned. For one, they didn’t expect to trespass into the lands of the ancient Cloud People, and did anyone happen to read those ominous signs some unknown person posted at the bottom of the mountain? Also, unicorns.

This hilarious, rollicking adventure series brings the beloved Lumberjanes characters into a novel format with brand-new adventures.

Review

I don’t read a lot of middle grade but I DO read a lot of Lumberjanes. This was such a fun book and Mariko and Brooklyn got the voice and atmosphere on point!

April, Molly, Mal, Ripley, and Jo are continuing their mission of earning scout badges at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thisle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. This time around, it’s the Extraordinary Explorers medal and obviously there’s no option other than to head up a mountain…where the unicorns live.

What I loved about this specific story was Mariko’s ability to make her sentiments about unicorns feel like knowledge that’s just accepted. Sure, these majestic creatures smell absolutely terrible. Of course they do! That is now canon in the world.

What I love about the Lumberjanes is their accessibility to all audiences. The diversity within the characters represents the real world, something we don’t see in many mainstream comics. This is an all ages story overall and Unicorn Power has appeal for younger audiences as well as those of us a little older.

Highly recommend for Lumberjanes fans and those who want a nice introduction. I dare you to pick up anything Lumberjanes and not get hooked!

i’ve been thinking about picking up some Lumberjane(s), and I think the camp name might be the deciding factor in finally getting me to do it. it’s hilarious! And I deeply appreciate precisely what you point out, how it’s diverse like real life.
