In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

Review

I love historical, paranormal, murder mystery, romance books. I keep seeing everyone saying Vampires (!) again, but I don’t see it as the earlier Twilight/Vampire Diaries (etc.) type book. The Beautiful is definitely a new category of paranormal fiction that fits into the market we currently have, with influences like Stalking Jack the Ripper style historical murder mysteries and fantasy books that have been influenced by popular books such a Throne of Glass and The Cruel Prince. These books which connect with and bring to light current modern day issues that have been previously not brought up in YA books.

I enjoyed Celine; she was a head strong character, needing to figure out what is going on and finding her place in 1872 New Orleans, America, after suffering from a traumatizing experience in Europe. She also has some very loyal friends and finds her love interest Sebastien surrounded by a cadre of friends and protectors. Hmm sound familiar? This is a great new take on bringing a paranormal literary experience to the YA genre with the perfect amount of suspense and romance. Renee Ahdieh has done it again with an amazing novel and I can’t wait to see what is coming next for Celine.

I was so fortunate to get a audiobook ARC of The Beautiful from Penguin Teen. Thank you so much Penguin Teen this is one of my top books for 2019! I thought the narrator did a great job on the pacing of the book. She kept me invested and interested in what was going to happen next which helped to drive the suspense of the novel. Definitely check out the audio for The Beautiful.

“What vampires are you favorite?” I approve of any well-dressed vampire in evening clothes!
