Audiobook Review: Fabulous Bodies by Chuck Tingle

Fabulous Bodies by Chuck Tingle is out now and it is exactly what you should expect from Chuck at this point…which is to say it is completely unexpected. His fourth mainstream horror novel after Camp Damascus, Bury Your Gays, and Lucky Day, this one is being described as Drive meets Beetlejuice. Check out our thoughts below and grab Fabulous Bodies, out now!

From Chuck Tingle, USA Today bestselling author of Bury Your Gays, comes Fabulous Bodies, a supernatural joyride where Drive meets Beetlejuice.

Fashion influencer by day and grave-robber by night, Poppy Stringer is on call when Eddie Michaels—a flamboyant, piano-slamming rockstar and queer icon—unexpectedly dies. All Poppy has to do is retrieve Eddie’s body from the medical examiner’s office, but what starts as a routine delivery quickly goes off course when Eddie wakes up.

Poppy must fight for her life in a blood-soaked night of carnage and fabulous entertainment all across Palm Springs.

Review

I went into Fabulous Bodies knowing essentially nothing and I am so glad about that. Poppy Stringer is a fashion influencer by day and a grave robber by night, and when her musical hero Eddie Michaels unexpectedly dies and she gets the call to retrieve his body, what follows is one of the most unhinged and genuinely fun nights in recent horror fiction. Drive meets Beetlejuice is entirely accurate. This is blood-soaked glitter-drenched chaos and it commits to itself completely.

We read this for our SPARC book club over the summer and I could not wait for that conversation because underneath all the carnage there is a story about survival and family and the strange ways people justify the lives they build for themselves that is going to give us a lot to dig into. Chuck Tingle always does this, wraps something real inside something completely unhinged, and Fabulous Bodies is maybe his most successful attempt yet.

The audiobook narrated by Mara Wilson is the move (yes, THAT Mara Wilson). Her delivery of Eddie’s dialogue in particular is something else!
