5 Reasons to Read All’s Fair in Love and Field Hockey by Kit Rosewater

I am thrilled to kick off the Sports Themed Blog Tour today with 5 Reasons to Read All’s Fair in Love and Field Hockey by Kit Rosewater! I am a huge sports fan, and before there were many LGBTQIA+ sports books published, I used to read straight sports romances, but now more and more queer sports romances are being published and for that reason alone I hope you check out this book – available now!

Thank you to Toppling Stacks Tours & Delacorte Press for gifting me finished copies!

A high school field hockey star must choose between her love of the game and her new, distractingly beautiful rival in this queer YA romance perfect for fans of She Drives Me Crazy and Cleat Cute!

"A masterclass in romantic tension."—Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Evelyn was raised to see field hockey as war.

Before she could write her own name, her family’s legacy on the field was already spelled out. Every step Evelyn takes toward glory is within a footprint her mother left behind. And no step matters more than this next one, with Evelyn about to lead her varsity team into their final battle season. Evelyn is beyond ready to score the Nationals title and win the critical scholarship to her mom’s alma mater that comes with it.

This year, she’s out for blood, and nothing can stand in her way...

...except for Rosa Alvarez, the highly talented new recruit on her biggest rival’s team.

After a humiliating homecoming game and follow-up prank leave the two enemies in a stalemate, they grudgingly strike a deal to help each other overcome their weaknesses on the field. But the more time Evelyn spends with Rosa, the more she finds herself casting her hardened armor aside, until she begins to wonder what life might be like if she left the battlefield behind and fought for love instead.

"This one’s definitely a keeper!”—Jennifer Dugan, bestselling author of Some Girls Do

5 Reasons to Read All’s Fair in Love and Field Hockey by Kit Rosewater

  1. We need more YA queer sports romances – In order to get that we need to be buying and reading the ones that are being published. Enough said.
  2. Rivals to Lovers – our two main characters are rivals on the field, they end up working together to try and become better athletes, and it leads to discussions of identity and self.
  3. Athletic Pressure – I love that a lot of YA sports books are really dealing with the amount of athletic pressure teens can put on themselves and are put upon them to live up to the dreams of their parents. This one does need some CWs, so look those up, the big C was a bit fresh for myself personally, but the grief was a big motivator for our MC.
  4. Internalized Homophobia/Biphobia – Okay here is where this YA book is written for teens moment, because many, many queer teens hide behind their internalized homophobia, and are performing compulsory heteronormativity. This is normal, and oh boy do I wish it was addressed better, for sure, but for me it was super relatable reading it as an adult who definitely lived that life of comphet for my HS years.
  5. Intersectional Feminism – Of course a girls sports romance book has to deal with intersectional feminism, because inherently sports are misogynistic, and on top of that you have the other player, the love interest, who is Mexican-American, and her lived experience is much different than the MC. I think this book did a really great job and laying those issues out on the table.
