Your friends gather around the table, character sheets at the ready. You dive into the fantasy: a dark dungeon crawling with enemies, the journey promising wealth or ruin, victory or defeat. Your party forges onward: roll Perception. . . . roll Stealth. . . . But not every question can be answered by the dice.
Decisions like when to trust, how to love, and who we are can’t be outsourced to a D20. We don’t get skill modifiers in real life—and we definitely don’t get fireball—but that doesn’t mean we can’t still find ways to access magic in our day-to-day.
From exploring gender identity with an oath-bound paladin to playing out an in-game romance with your best friend, tabletop gaming paves the way for new relationships and shows us the richness of the worlds we inhabit, both fictional and real.
Within these pages, adventure awaits—but first, it’s time to roll for Initiative.
This collection of fourteen stories includes critically acclaimed authors such as New York Times Bestseller Marieke Nijkamp, New York Times Bestseller Andrew Joseph White, Pura Belpré Honor winner Jonny Garza Villa, LAMBDA Literary Award winner Rebecca Podos, LAMBDA Award finalist Linsey Miller, Indie Bestseller Margaret Owen, and Morris Award finalist Akemi Dawn Bowman.
5 Reasons to Read This is How We Roll
- Well first and foremost if you are a TTRPG (Table Top Role Playing Game) or DND fan, that’s Dungeons and Dragons for the rest of y’all, this anthology is a must read! But I think there is enough heart within that makes these cozy and wholesome stories accessible to any reader!
- The short stories are all either in-game or based in reality around role playing games, and all of them are about self discovery, coming-of-age, and how role playing allows oneself to learn and feel like they belong and how to express themselves with care and tenderness.
- The joy of finding community and people who have similar interests – found family is such an important queer trope and these short stories have a lot of that.
- Shares the importance of how gaming can help people with anxiety and depression, as well as bringing those fears to the forefront in an imagined reality where they are safe.
- The stories are all written by amazingly talented (some award winning!!) queer authors which empower readers about queerness and belonging. Each short story is different and some will be more influential and enjoyable to each reader on an individual basis, but overall this anthology is just good plain fun!
