Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn't listen ...
Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people's souls while they sleep.
But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.
When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.
A.M. Strickland's imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai's own soul, but the entire kingdom ...
Meet the Character Interview
We were very lucky and got to ask Kamai a few questions about themselves!
1. How would you describe yourself?
Kamai: I love doing the quieter things that no one notices, like reading a book curled up in the chair in the corner, or like soulwalking in someone’s soul while everyone else is asleep. I like dark dresses and secrets, and I want to be like my mother when I grow up … except the part about sleeping with people. Sometimes I worry that I’m trying to be what I think I should be, rather than being who I actually am.
2. Magic plays a big role in your life, what does it mean specifically to you?
Kamai: Soulwalking is both a doorway to what I want and also a barrier. Soulwalking is a rare gift that allows me to walk in someone’s soul and explore their secrets while they sleep, which would allow me to be the spy that I want to be. The problem is, to soulwalk I have to sleep next to people. The easiest way to do this is to sleep with people, and I don’t want to do that. Ever.
3. As you reconcile your soulwalking and your sexuality, what are your fears and motivators?
Kamai: I’m afraid I’ll let down my mother, and that I’ll never be a good enough soulwalker to accomplish my goals. But slowly I’m realizing that discovering who I am is just as important. I need to figure out a way both to be myself and to find my place in the world … and to maybe get revenge at the same time.
4. What book are you reading right now?
Kamai: I’m reading three, actually! A strategy guide to Gods and Kings (my favorite card game), The People’s History of Eopia, and a sweet romance that I pretend is a murder mystery to anyone who asks.
