Julian is drop-dead gorgeous, annoyingly provocative, and he’s fast becoming her best friend. But he also has a secret that makes the little hairs on her arms stand on end…

My name is Jona Montiniere, and that’s pretty much the only good thing to say about me.

I’m seventeen, I’m snarky, and I’m a crap-load of trouble. Or so they say. But what did they expect from me really, when they dumped me in an orphanage at age five? That I’d grow up to become the new first lady? Nah, I think it’s much more fun to raid Camden Market in London with my friend, Debby. She’s cool. She lives on the street. I learned so much from her.

The only thing she missed to teach me was how to tend to a vineyard. And yeah, that’s what I’m going to do for the next 6 weeks, courtesy to this darn judge, who sent me off to France after I was caught stealing again. Fair enough, the vineyards are okay, and so are my aunt and uncle, who I haven’t met up ‘til now. What isn’t okay, and I mean it, is that I have to live in the same house with my mother, that god-awful dragon, who spurned when I was only a child. And now she wants me back? Demands my forgiveness? Why, because she’s about to die of cancer? Uh-uh. Sorry, but that’s not gonna happen. I want no contact with that woman, thanks.

But what’s Julian got to do with all of this? About my age, he’s too young to be my mother’s lover. So why doesn’t he leave her side? Ever. He’s different, as in the paranormal kind of different, but he’s sa-woon-worthy gorgeous. He obviously has secrets, but he’s also get-under-my-skin charming. In short, he’s a riddle to me. But he likes me, and that’s scaring the shit out of me. I sure won’t let anyone come too close.

So now I’m wondering only two things: How did he manage to hold me in his arms after only three days? And how the hell do you keep an angel earth bound?

Spoiler Free Review

Jona Montiniere has never had it easy, an orphan growing up in London, she’s as scrappy as a feral cat. I instantly liked her bad attitude and spunky demeanor. From the very beginning I was hooked on this book, when Jona meets her long lost mother and unleashes her viciousness I couldn’t help but silently cheer her on (it felt wrong but I couldn’t help it). Then there is mysterious and oh so devilishly handsome Julian. He is able to chip away at Jona’s defenses and get to the girl underneath. Having the majority of the book take place at a winery in France was a nice change of scenery and served as a unique backdrop. The scenes with Jona and her dying mother became gut wrenching as the book went on and I found myself getting a little frustrated as the big reveal as to Julian’s identity seemed to drag on a bit. While it’s noted in the book description that he’s an angel the explanation as to why he was there with Jona’s mother kind of had me scratching my head (but hey it’s a book about angels). Still, Jona and Julian had great chemistry and I especially loved the scene at the beach. The resolution with Jona’s mother was equal parts heartbreaking and beautiful (if she didn’t stop being a brat I was going to scream). My big complaints would be with the title of the book (It sounds more like a contemporary romance title than YA Paranormal) and also how Julian’s story was wrapped up. Without being spoilery I just wasn’t satisfied with the explanation of his return. All in all though this book was a little gem and I think Julian will find his way onto many a girls book boyfriend list (and my choice for Julian? Totally, Austin Butler.

Author Interview

5 Questions for Loving Your Lies, Piper Shelly:

Hello everybody and thanks for the nice invitation today!

1. Was there one thing that inspired you to write Loving Your Lies?

Only one? There were so many… LOL! But meeting a young man in London who had angelic hands was definitely one of them. 😉 I also had a special experience once, where I felt really close to my guardian angel. In my mind, he totally looks like Julian, so yeah, that was probably the strongest inspiration for the story.

2. What is your favorite music artist to listen to while writing?

Umm…basically, I pick music that matches my mood while I write, so you get everything, from mainstream, to orchestra, to sometimes even African choirs. But I do have a thing for piano music. Guillaume Robbe, Jervy Hou, and the Piano Guys are my all time favorites.

3. Favorite book you read this year (not your own)?

That would be Fifty Shades of Grey. LOL. I refused to read it for a very long time, but when I started, I couldn’t put it down anymore. However, I only really liked the first book in the trilogy.

4. Favorite book genre you enjoy reading the most?

No, don’t ask me that, ha ha. It’s so hard to choose one. Contemporary YA, paranormal, preferably with angels or vampires in them, some witch fantasies, or even the occasional historical. But the one thing they all have in common is they’re romances. I don’t like reading any other genre.

5. Biggest Book Crush you have right now?

Right now? Oh. Is it weird to say Christian Grey? 😉
