I was blown away by Gentle Chains. It was nothing like I was expecting. It was a fantastically written tale, spun with darkness and fantasy. This isn’t a lighthearted read, it is deep and at times heart wrenching. When I started reading this book I was expecting a standalone, but once I reached the end I knew there had to be more! I am not sure what hurt more the dark tale of slavery, torture and loss–or that crazy cliffhanger.
This sci-fi world that Nazarea Andrews crafted is so profound and imaginative. I love a great fantasy and this one threw me a little but I still devoured it–even if I felt sick over it at times. Not only is the world scary but so are the characters and there are dragons. Dragons always help!
The main characters are Juhan and Chosi who are psychic twins who are stolen into slavery and sold separately at auction. This is where you really experience the darkness as the story is told from each twin’s POV. Juhan was sold off into political slavery and used to help manipulate the system. While Chosi was sold into blood sport and she experiences some appalling things. But her hope to be reunited with her family and for her freedom keeps her head above ground and gets her through her daily trials.
I can’t say much more as I want this to stay spoiler-free but I highly connected with Johan & Chosis’ journey and I expect great things from the next installment. This experience isn’t for the weak of heart but the journey is so worth it. Gentle Chains is an epic adventure of survival and love. I can feel the book hangover already.
