Comic Crush Saturday & Giveaway: October 24th, 2020

Welcome to Comic Crush Saturday, our bi-weekly feature focused on the graphic elements of the book world. Comics became a huge part of my life a few years ago when I started reviewing them (and comic related TV shows) on Forever Young Adult. I’ve maintained a pulllist through my local comic shop, Isotope Comics, and even got Kelly to start one ;). You’ll find mini-reviews, what we’ve read recently, and more so check it out!

Swamp Thing: Twin Branches

by Maggie Stiefvater, Morgan Beem

Twins Alec and Walker Holland have a reputation around town. One is quiet and the other is the life of any party, but they are inseparable. For their last summer before college, the two leave the city to live with their rural cousins, where they find that the swamp holds far darker depths than they could have imagined.
While Walker carves their names into the new social scene, Alec recedes into a summer school laboratory, because he brought something from home on their trip—it’s an experiment that will soon consume him. This season, both brothers must confront truths, ancient and familial, and as their lives diverge, tensions increase and dormant memories claw to the surface.

Swamp Thing is a character I’m quite unfamiliar with. Atmospheric, eerie, and injected with a whole lot of Maggie, Twin Branches made me want to look into previous stories and check out the current TV show. I hope we get more from this character (and Maggie!) in the line.

Plus, the colors and page usage are to die for. Pick this one up, out now!

TY DC Comics for sending me a copy of Swamp Thing!

The Magic Fish

Tiến loves his family and his friends...but Tiến has a secret he's been keeping from them, and it might change everything. An amazing YA graphic novel that deals with the complexity of family and how stories can bring us together.

Real life isn't a fairytale.
But Tiến still enjoys reading his favorite stories with his parents from the books he borrows from the local library. It's hard enough trying to communicate with your parents as a kid, but for Tiến, he doesn't even have the right words because his parents are struggling with their English. Is there a Vietnamese word for what he's going through?
Is there a way to tell them he's gay?
A beautifully illustrated story by Trung Le Nguyen that follows a young boy as he tries to navigate life through fairytales, an instant classic that shows us how we are all connected. The Magic Fish tackles tough subjects in a way that accessible with readers of all ages, and teaches us that no matter what--we can all have our own happy endings.

Ugh, I knew The Magic Fish was going to be gorgeous and break me before I picked it up but if this book doesn’t win ALL THE AWARDS, I will be so disappointed. Fairytales within a fairytale alongside this beautiful story of family – this is a book that isn’t to be missed.

Master spy Twilight is the best at what he does when it comes to going undercover on dangerous missions in the name of a better world. But when he receives the ultimate impossible assignment—get married and have a kid—he may finally be in over his head!

Not one to depend on others, Twilight has his work cut out for him procuring both a wife and a child for his mission to infiltrate an elite private school. What he doesn’t know is that the wife he’s chosen is an assassin and the child he’s adopted is a telepath!

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up SpyxFamily but I am officially obsessed with this little family and I need allllll the future volumes. My fav new manga of this year!

What We Can’t Wait For

Did I preorder them both? I sure did. I have been a fan of Serial Box stuff for years and their new partnerships with DC and Marvel are just perfect.
