First Lines Fridays: January 13th, 2017
It’s First Lines Friday time! Today’s lines come to you from a brand spankin’ new release. This is a book I had the pleasure of beta reading (and proofreading!). Ready? Let’s do a few lines this morning.
About:
Each week we will pick a YA or NA book from our shelves and copy the first line, in an attempt to acquaint you with some new reads or reintroduce you to old favorites. We will have an accompanying Instagram pic to go along with our choices each week so check out #firstlinesfridays!
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? If you want to join the meme be sure to check out Wandering Words, and here are her rules below.
The rules:
- Pick a book off your shelf (or your current read) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally…reveal the book!
Here are the first lines:
His stomach dropped, and what little Athan had eaten turned to rock. He wasn’t feeling well, far from it, but that was typical of being cut by a Skia blade. However, even though he was injured, it was the news from the demigod standing over him that made Athan’s mind spin and his weakened body protest every single move he made.
And the book is . . .
Ta da! Myths of Immortality by Raye Wagner. This is book three in her The Sphinx series (YA Greek mythology), and in this story, Hope journeys to the Underworld to try to break the curse Apollo has placed on her. Athan, Xan, and Dahlia team up to find Hope and bring her home. It’s an action-packed story from start to finish and you’ll be left wanting more . . . which is a good thing because book four will be out this spring!
Book 1, Curse of the Sphinx, is only 99 cents, and all the books in the series are available on Kindle Unlimited. Check it out here.

In the realm of the dead, there are no lies.
Hope Nicholas is desperate to believe that the truth will set her free from the bindings of Apollo’s curse. But to get the truth, she must travel to the Underworld, a feat near impossible for the living. The gods there have their own agendas and, forced to forge alliances with the most unlikely allies, Hope will find that death is not the worst torment of the Underworld.
Athan Michael spent months chasing Hope, only to have her disappear once again. And when he discovers her destination, he knows the treacherous journey to the Underworld is one he cannot take alone. Forced to put aside his past with Xan and Dahlia, the three demigods embark on their own quest. But the past will not stay buried, and Athan must decide how much he’s willing to sacrifice to help Hope break the curse.
Told in dual points of view, Myths of Immortality is a tense, action-packed story that will leave you begging for the next installment of The Sphinx series. (less)
