Feature: First Lines Fridays – March 3rd, 2017
Happy First Lines Friday! Today’s line comes from a book I finished last week. Ready?
Each week we will pick a YA or NA book from our shelves and copy the first line, in an attempt to acquaint you with some new reads or reintroduce you to old favorites. We will have an accompanying Instagram pic to go along with our choices each week so check out #firstlinesfridays!
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? If you want to join the meme be sure to check out Wandering Words, and here are her rules below.
- Pick a book off your shelf (or your current read) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally…reveal the book!
Here are the first lines:
I OFFERED MY HAND TO THE FIRE.
Sparks leaped from the hearth and settled onto my fingers, heat drawn to heat, and glittered like molten gems against my skin.
The book is Frostblood by Elly Blake. You might have already heard of this book, and for good reason—it’s phenomenal! This was a 5-star read for me. I loved every second of this fast-paced, engaging story of Ruby, a girl with the power of fire, and her push-and-pull relationship with the taciturn Arcus, a mysterious man with the power of frost. The book captured my attention from the first page (how could it not, with those opening lines?) and I couldn’t put it down. I adored Ruby, who was strong, kind, imperfect, vulnerable, and sassy. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, that’s for sure. Frostblood was beautifully written, and the imagery! Gorgeous. I can’t recommend the story enough. I hope you’ll pick up a copy and enjoy it!

The frost king will burn.
Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.
Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating—yet irresistible—Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.
