There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Inter-ests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.
Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is im-portant to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?
Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.
What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

I got to ask Cale some amazing questions & he answered them so awesomely!
- As a queer adult who is an avid reader of YA, I flock to any YA that has LGBTQ elements, and first of all I want to thank you for this book, and secondly I was wondering if you could tell us some of your favorite GLBTQ YA books?
Woot for being a queer adult who loves YA! That’s totally me. And same! And this is such a great question. I have so many favorites! There’s so much good stuff out there at the moment, which makes me so happy.
A definite favorite is LAST SEEN LEAVING by Caleb Roehrig – it’s an #ownvoices thriller and it’s so amazing. It’s got great voice, the mystery is super twisty and gripping, and Caleb is so freaking nice on Twitter. If TLI were to have a book brother, it’d totally be LSL.
Also both of Adam Silvera’s books DESTROYED my emotions in the best way. Those books are seriously writing goals. Another book I love is ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN by Will Walton – I found it so touching and I can’t wait to read it again. Also, everyone on the freaking planet knows this, but Becky Albertalli’s books are both amazing. They’re the charming funny romantic comedies that I wish I had in high school. Also, this book isn’t out yet, but keep an eye out for Kevin Savoie – I’ve read a draft of his book and it’s freaking amazing.
*Adds Will Walton’s Anything Could Happen to my list! And I will keep my eyes on Kevin Savoie. Adam is the master at destroying readers, I have read all the rest, and love them. I will be reading Becky’s newest soon!
- Sticking with the GAY YA theme, what are some YA stories you think would be awesomely retold with GLBTQ characters?
This is such an amazing question! I want to say all of them, but I know that isn’t helpful, haha. I know this isn’t YA, but I love superhero stories, so I would love a gay Batman or a gay Spider-Man. Or maybe an F/F Black Widow story? Or Harry Potter where Drarry ended up cannon! On the YA end, I’d like a gay THE HUNGER GAMES or DIVERGENT. I don’t mean like dystopian, I’d just like for there to be a really popular series that stars a gay guy.
*Agreed! I want something to skyrocket into massive success where the main character is gay!
- What inspired you to be so open with common tropes and the fun in making them kind of breaking the 4th wall in the book?
Another great question! To be honest, the premise that popped into my head one morning (of a training academy for dreamy love interests of YA books) was already so obviously meta that I kinda just went with it. I love stories like THE CABIN IN THE WOODS and especially COMMUNITY, where they are meta, but in a loving way, and they still function as the same type of story that they are meta about. So the idea of writing a meta YA book was so compelling to me, which is why I was so open with the tropes. Plus, it was super fun to write.
*YES! That is exactly the feel I got from TLI! I can’t wait for the world to read this book!
