Excerpt:
“I didn’t know it’d be this tough.” I hear the shakiness in my voice. My body trembles. This must be what skydivers feel like before they make the big jump.
“I think I’ve got an idea,” he says. He turns around with his back facing me, and he points to it. “Get on.”
“What?”
“Piggy back. It’s the only way you’ll get in.”
“I’m too heavy,” I say. “And aren’t piggy backs for kids?”
“Piggy backs are for everyone. Okay, so maybe I’m not going to be lifting someone when I’m eighty. Anyway, I lift canoes, which, I think may be a good ten to twenty pounds heavier than you.”
“I doubt that.”
“Are we going to debate your weight all day? ‘Cause if so, I’m out,” he says. I hear the irritation in his tone. “Girls and their weight. If they’re thin, they think they’re fat,” he mumbles.
“Okay,” I relent and move close to his back. His bare skin touches mine. I see goosebumps appear all over my arms and legs, and I’m not even cold. I feel warm and tingly inside. Like I’ve just had a glass of hot water and the liquid is oozing its way down from my throat to my feet. His skin is so smooth. There isn’t an ounce of hair on his back. I’m tempted to run my finger across it, but that’d make me look like a weirdo.
He turns his head, and his mouth is so close to my face. I can smell his breath and feel its warmth.“You going to stand there all day?”
“Gosh, you’re bossy,” I say with frustration.
“Just jump already.”
I leap up onto his back. He grabs my legs with his hands and starts walking toward the water. “Close your eyes if you have to.”
“You don’t have the best bedside manner.”
He ignores me and keeps walking. The water hits him at his knees. “Okay, I’m about to go all in, and I want you to keep holding onto me.”
Keep holding on. I can do that.
