Interview

1. What inspired the sewing challenge aspect of your fantasy?

After immigrating to the US, my grandmother spent many years as a seamstress. Maia Tamarin’s talent and passion for sewing is directly inspired by her!

2. How has your publishing experience of Spin the Dawn differed from your earlier works?

SPIN THE DAWN is my first original novel to be published. It definitely isn’t the first novel I’ve written though…it’s probably my sixth or seventh! It was easier to write than Reflection in the sense that the world and characters are entirely mine. Staying true to Mulan, Captain Li Shang, and Mushu’s voice was a fun challenge for me, but one I was glad I didn’t have to worry about in SPIN THE DAWN. At the same time, it was harder to write because I had to create Maia’s world and its magic system from scratch, but imbuing SPIN THE DAWN with hints from some of my favorite fairytales was my favorite part!

3. Tell us something compelling and unique about your main character?

I don’t know if this is unique, but Maia is really ambitious and determined to become the best she can at her craft, tailoring, but she’s also really human and vulnerable. I’ve loved writing her and seeing her grow as a character (and seeing her take me in directions I hadn’t expected!).

4. How different is writing a book compared to composing music?

It’s actually pretty similar! The medium is different, but I find that the preparation and writing (coming up with themes, teasing them out, and structuring a narrative over time) to be very much alike. And there’s years of honing one’s craft involved, which is why I think I enjoy both so much! There’s always room to improve 🙂

5. What are you currently working on (if you can share with us)?

I’m currently working on the sequel to Spin the Dawn, and potentially another book in the same world.

6. Most importantly, who is your favorite Star Wars character?

I LOVE this question. My favourites are Mara Jade and Tionne from the expanded universe (*tears*).

About Elizabeth Lim

Elizabeth Lim grew up on a hearty staple of fairy tales, myths, and songs. Her passion for storytelling began around age 10, when she started writing fanfics for Sailor Moon, Sweet Valley, and Star Wars, and posted them online to discover, "Wow, people actually read my stuff. And that's kinda cool!" But after one of her teachers told her she had "too much voice" in her essays, Elizabeth took a break from creative writing to focus on not flunking English.

Over the years, Elizabeth became a film and video game composer, and even went so far as to get a doctorate in music composition. But she always missed writing, and turned to penning stories when she needed a breather from grad school. One day, she decided to write and finish a novel -- for kicks, at first, then things became serious -- and she hasn't looked back since.

Elizabeth loves classic film scores, books with a good romance, food (she currently has a soft spot for arepas and Ethiopian food), the color turquoise, overcast skies, English muffins, cycling, and baking. She lives in New York City with her husband.
