“They killed me, but I survived.”

Three years after Rory Riordan foiled her own murder, she still trusts no one. Not Dr. Z, the eccentric college professor who has taken her under his wing, not Benji, the endearing, attractive classmate who insists on following her around, and certainly not Cy, the beautifully dark and mysterious boy who sits on the first row in Dr. Z’s Astrobiology class and asks far too many questions.

When Rory witnesses Cy being abducted by soldiers in the middle of the night, she finds herself submersed in a world that holds even more secrets than she could imagine–even darker secrets than her own.

From #1 New York Times Bestseller Jamie McGuire, experience the perfect combination of her bestselling books Providence & Beautiful Disaster. This New Adult Sci-Fi Romance is an action-packed, whiplash-inducing roller coaster ride. Page after page, this unpredictable, dark and sexy nail biter will keep readers guessing until the very end!

Spoiler-Free Review:

[book rating=3.5/5.0]

Apolonia is hard to describe but I can say that it is definitely an interesting read! It had me turning the pages quickly so I could unravel the mystery!

IMG_0019Let’s talk Rory. First of all, I love her name! It feels like it fits her to a tee. She’s been through some serious shit including attempted murder. She’s starting her second year of college and she definitely doesn’t fit in at all. She’s a strong-willed, loner with a sharp tongue and isn’t afraid of anyone or anything. She has mad self defensive skills that completely contrast her self destructive behaviors. Rory is broken in so many ways, but I am drawn to her. I connected with her as a reader. She has issues even forming friendships let alone getting involved with anyone romantically. But somehow despite her efforts to keep her distance she starts spending even more time with the relentless Benji, who has been courting her since freshman orientation.

Benji…had all the right moves. He was so sweet and persistent. From his pestering Rory to study with him, work out or to eat lunch, it’s adorable. Rory knows she needs him as a friend, but she keeps his advances at bay. He may be the most patient college student on this planet! Where Rory was all White Stripe Tees and black skinny jeans, Benji was all buttoned up oxfords. Then there is Cy, tall, dark & mysterious. To Rory, Cy is a threat, she knows he is smarter than her and she is afraid he is going to usurp her work-study position as a research assistant for Dr. Z. So she starts paying way too much attention to him…until she is beyond intrigued. Insert drama here. Two gorgeous boys who both seem to want to protect Rory, when she doesn’t want to be protected. If there was any gripe with this part of the story it was that Rory’s relationship with Cy felt a bit forced and didn’t unfold as naturally as it did with Benji.

The first half of the book felt a bit disconnected from the second half insofar that it felt like a more traditional NA you are just reading into every little detail trying to discern where the plot is going to take you. The second half of the book the action really picks up. And as the mysterious elements of the story were revealed, I was totally into where the story headed. Still the sci-fi aspects of the story felt a bit rushed. If maybe one or two elements were cut (perhaps the pseudo love triangle) it really would have helped the flow. Still, the mystery kept me turning the pages and honestly I was really into the Rory/Benji dynamic (can we get a Rory/Benji spin off, pretty please?!) Fans of New Adult and Paranormal Romance looking for something a bit different will find Apolonia a unique read.
