A betrayal born of blood

A love worth saving

Koldan Holdt knows what he wants. The problem is his future was decided the day he was born—a future void of everything he has ever known.

Days before summer vacation, Koldan’s grandfather suddenly dies, leaving the consequences that have followed him since he fled his country to fall to Koldan. As Koldan learns about his new fate, he must accept the terms to which he is bound and live without the one person he wants, or remain true to who he is and risk both their lives repeating the choices his grandfather made.

Seventeen-year-old Raya Whitney thought she knew Koldan…until a sudden turn of events threatens both their lives. While she is not willing to give up without a fight, she knows it is a deadly game to stay together.

Book Trailer:

Spoiler-free Review:

It’s hard to start this review because all I want to talk about is the plot and that’s a no-no in a spoiler-free review. So I’ll start by talking about why I rated this book 3.5 hearts. This rating does not mean it was a bad book, not at all! What it was, was a creative, suspenseful, unique story about young love, familial obligations and an adventure that no one was expecting (not even me!). I was so shocked by this plot that well…you will just have to read it for yourselves!

The characters were so well crafted, that I felt like I knew them and was screaming at my kindle during rather tense parts. Koldan is amazing, I want to curl up next to him like Raya does just to hear him talk! Speaking of Raya, she’s an interesting character. I am not sure if I think she is strong willed & bull headed or just too innocent. But she grows on you & well apparently everyone else too. Lukas, Koldan’s younger brother, well let’s just say I have the deep need to follow him around like a puppy dog and watch him flip his hair and be a smart-ass. These aren’t your standard young adult characters, and well neither is the story. Koldan goes off to college, pre-med, years early; Lukas is too smart for his own good and their best friend Ethan, can do just about anything since his family is rich enough.  Clearly, Raya spends too much time with these three boys.

The plot will definitely take you on a turbulent ride right along with the characters. Fair warning that the book can drag a little in the middle and I assume I just got bogged down with too many details and too much description but it is all necessary to set the stage for the more riveting final chapters. I am a self proclaimed science nerd, and the science in this book is easily explained & understood, but where the science is good, some of the lesser plot points makes me scratch my head? But do not let it sway you, trust me keep reading, the energy returns as we are thrust into the climatic ending that will leave you screaming for more!

Lastly, the book is categorized as paranormal…and so I kept waiting for that shoe to drop, and well still waiting. I added some other genres in the book description because if I know a genre of a book I clearly read it anticipating those types of plots and I just don’t think this volume was paranormal, possibly more to come. This book is hard to pin down though – Sci-Fi, maybe; suspense, absolutely; worthy of a read, definitely!

  1. I’m glad you were wondering on the paranormal aspect of the book. Granted, I’m only 37% into the book, but I haven’t seen anything that blatenly screams paranormal. Maybe it will come later.
I’m enjoying that they aren’t the standard young characters, just like you did. It’s refreshing to have something so different.

    • I was so worried about writing that last paragraph about the genre of the book, as I wasn’t sure if that was spoilery or not…but it really bothered me, so I shared! The whole time I was like “Oooh I bet this is going to happen, or That’s whats doing it!” but all my predictions were wrong because I wasn’t reading anything paranormal.

Yes, the characters were awesome and so well developed. I do love it when I read something fresh as well as characters so well crafted that I feel like I know them IRL.

Thanks for the comment & I hope you enjoy the book!

    • So I wanted to share what the publicity team told me about the Paranormal genre coding…by Emlyn at Novel Publicity-
“Hi, I’ll answer this question. Stephanie and I went back and forth A LOT as to how to categorize Render. Straight YA didn’t seem to say enough, and speculative/sci-fi might attract a different type of reader. Ultimately, I encouraged the paranormal categorization because the cover and writing style fit into that genre so well! I also knew readers who love paranormal would love Render.”

I wholeheartedly agree that readers of YA Paranormal would love this book, so now we know!

  2. So glad you enjoyed Render, Kelly, and I’m also glad we got a chance to chat at the GoodReads party this week! Thank you for participating in this tour and for taking a moment to cross-post your review to Amazon and GoodReads when you have the time.
