Category: Young Adult, Historical fiction, Mystery
Purchase: Amazon, B&N, The Book Depository

The thrilling conclusion to the New York Times best-selling series the Chicago Tribune called “Sherlock Holmes crossed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer” sends the eccentric detective and his indispensible assistant into the heart of a war between magical worlds.

The fate of the world is in the hands of detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby and his intrepid assistant, Abigail Rook. An evil king is turning ancient tensions into modern strife, using a blend of magic and technology to push Earth and the Otherworld into a mortal competition. Jackaby and Abigail are caught in the middle as they continue to solve the daily mysteries of New Fiddleham, New England — like who’s created the rend between the worlds, how to close it, and why zombies are appearing around. At the same time, the romance between Abigail and the shape-shifting police detective Charlie Cane deepens, and Jackaby’s resistance to his feelings for 926 Augur Lane’s ghostly lady, Jenny, begins to give way. Before the four can think about their own futures, they will have to defeat an evil that wants to destroy the future altogether.

The epic conclusion to the New York Times best-selling Jackaby series features sly humor and a quirky cast of unforgettable characters as they face off against their most dangerous, bone-chilling foe ever.

Praise for Jackaby:

“A little Dr. Who, a little Harry Potter, and a lot of Sherlock, New York Times bestselling author Will Ritter’s Jackaby series has thrilled YA readers with magic, mystery and adventure since the first book introduced us to a supernatural sleuth and his trusty assistant. In The Dire King: A Jackaby Novel (on sale August 22), Ritter sends the series out with a bang, with even more mystery, romance, and the most epic battle yet. We hope you’ll strongly consider prominent coverage for The Dire King–and all the Jackaby books—as we say goodbye to our crime-solving friends in New Fiddleham.

“A humorous, energetic, action-packed, and magical conclusion.”  —Kirkus Reviews, starred review Ritter’s debut novel

Jackaby (a New York Times bestseller and 2015 Pacific Northwest Book Award winner) introduced readers to R.F. Jackaby, a quirky detective with a knack for the supernatural; Abigail Rook, his skeptical and observant assistant; Jenny Cavanaugh, the ghostly landlady of 926 Augur Lane; and Charlie Cane, a shape-shifting police officer. Beastly Bones and Ghostly Echoes followed the crime-solving team from their home in New Fiddleham to the depths of the underworld as they uncovered more clues about the evil forces behind Jenny’s murder.

Review:

[book rating=4/5]

It’s the end…in more ways than one. The end of the series, and in said series: the end of the world.

The whole gang is together for this last rendezvous—along with some new faces. It’s the culmination of all the events we’ve read about so far. So, definitely read from book one, because you have to experience the full journey. And while I thoroughly enjoyed this final installment, I can’t say it’s the greatest ending.

The Dire King is by far the darkest of the four. I’m not complaining at all! I love dark reads. But I will admit I missed Jackaby’s usual humor and quips. The plot itself is jam-packed. There are a ton of things happening, so you’ll have to be on your A-game in order to not miss important things. Which, I fully admit, I was not!

There was one thing (that I won’t spoil) that upset me a bit. Something I’d been wanting to happen throughout the series. And a few other moments left me, not disappointed, but I don’t know. Unsatisfied? Bummed out? Probably both. And truly, I feel like this isn’t an ending to everything.

I still recommend this series. It’s so much fun and underrated! These last two books weren’t the strongest, but I promise they’re still enjoyable. I will miss Jackaby, Abigail, and the rest. I hope for more of them down the road, perhaps a spinoff?!?!

Character Crush: Build-a-Super-Mega-Detective

I took a few qualities from famous/infamous detectives and combined them to create one super-mega detective! I’m sure I could have added more, but for the sake of space, I limited myself.

a.) Sherlock Holmes’s hat, pipe, and magnifying glass: Because every detective should look the part!

b.) Azriel’s shadows: I know he’s not a detective, BUT, I feel his shadows would come in handy for spying and concealing identities!

c.) Jackaby’s wit/humor: Without this, many detectives are dull. Humor is a must!

d.) An unappreciated sidekick: Without these guys, most detectives wouldn’t be able to solve half their cases. Or miss important details.

e.) Sookie Stackhouse’s telepathy: I know she’s not a detective, but come on. Her ability helped solve murders, other crimes, and prevent them, too.

f.) Inspector Gadget’s gadgets: Because why not?!?!?! Every advantage can only make their jobs easier!

So, what things would you add to build a super detective?

I love this series! The characters are unique and the stories are interesting. Jackaby almost puts me in mind of a Doctor Who type.
