Blog Tour & Giveaway: Girl Power Graphic Novels

Today is a day for GIRL POWER! I am thrilled to be a part of First Second Books tour featuring Girl Power Graphic Novels! Since Christy (aka @diamondxgirl) was the most recent person to push me into reading more graphic novels & comics, we teamed up to bring you a fun feature inspired by the newly released fantasy, The City on the Other Side by Mairghread Scott & Robin Robinson!

The City on the Other Side by Mairghread Scott & Robin Robinson

Category: Graphic Novel, Fantasy, Historical Fiction
Publication: April 24th, 2018; First Second Books
Purchase: Amazon

When a wealthy and sheltered young girl stumbles into a pitched war between two fairy kingdoms, the fate of San Francisco itself hangs in the balance!

The first decade of the twentieth century is coming to a close, and San Francisco is still recovering from the great earthquake of 1906. Isabel watched the destruction safely from her window, sheltered within her high-society world.

Isabel isn’t the kind of girl who goes on adventures. But that all changes when she stumbles through the invisible barrier that separates the human world from the fairy world. She quickly finds herself caught up in an age-old war and fighting on the side of the Seelie—the good fairies.

The City on the Other Side is set in two worlds – San Francisco post – 1906 Earthquake and a fairy world across the veil. The 1906 Earthquake forever changed the Bay Area, destroying more than 80% of San Francisco and is considered one of the worst natural disasters in the world. The City on the Other Side explores a battle on the fairy side that has shaken our world through the veil – literally. Also, we are both big Supernatural fans and in the current season, the Winchesters are exploring the world across a tear in the space-time continuum. So with all this talk of otherworlds and their cross over to ours, we thought it would be fun to explore some real world occurrences and the YA books that could have made them happen.

Please note, time across the veil may work differently so a book set in our perceived present could very well impact the past (just go with it, ok!).

3 Occurrences in Our World that Happened Across the (Book) Veil

2016 Election vs The Boomerang Effect by Gordon Jack

The boomerang effect refers to the unintended consequences of an attempt to persuade resulting in the adoption of an opposing position instead. Lawrence is trying his best to put the pieces into action to right his wrongs. Things go very awry…Which landed us in this world in some hot water. The author, Gorden Jack, is adamant that his upcoming book, Your Own Worst Enemy, will undo some of the damage (PS it comes out right after midterm elections!)

The Reformation vs The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

The Reformation “started” when Martin Luther sent his 95 theses against the Catholic Church to an archbishop, just like the events of The Illuminae Files are spurned by the release of the documents that later took down Beitech. Coincidence? I think not.

Armstrong Walks on the Moon vs A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland

Armstrong taking those first steps on the moon is the culmination of countless hours of people working together toward a common goal. The end result was the next step in human revolution (or so they believed). Across the void, Esther is chipping away slowly at her worst nightmares – and landing herself at the end of a journey of self-actualization.

These are just three examples of how the activities across the veil have real world impacts!

I’m going to add Gemina to this list as it makes the reader consider what would happen if parallel universes existed and what if only one could be saved–what would happen if you were the one who had to choose and chose poorly?

I actually am looking for recommendations on graphic novels geared towards girls which is how I stumbled on your blog. I volunteer at my son’s elementary school library. The other day I had a 5th grade girl ask me for a graphic novel geared towards girls. The only ones we had were the Babysitters Club. She was looking for something different and I had no other graphic novels to recommend. I am adding these to our library wish list. Thanks for the recommendations !

I grew up in a family of teachers and girls. We love and respect books. We all have shelves filled with them. And we are all for girl power!
