Welcome to Comic Crush Saturday, our bi-weekly feature focused on the graphic elements of the book world. Comics became a huge part of my life a few years ago when I started reviewing them (and comic related TV shows) on Forever Young Adult. I’ve maintained a pulllist through my local comic shop, Isotope Comics, and even got Kelly to start one ;). You’ll find mini-reviews, what we’ve read recently, and more so check it out!

Fake Blood

by Whitney Gardner
Published by: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
on September 4, 2018
Genres: Graphic Novel, Middle Grade

It’s the beginning of the new school year and AJ feels like everyone is changing but him. He hasn’t grown or had any exciting summer adventures like his best friends have. He even has the same crush he’s harbored for years. So AJ decides to take matters into his own hands. But how could a girl like Nia Winters ever like plain vanilla AJ when she only has eyes for vampires?

When AJ and Nia are paired up for a group project on Transylvania, it may be AJ’s chance to win over Nia’s affection by dressing up like the vamp of her dreams. And soon enough he’s got more of Nia’s attention than he bargained for when he learns she’s a slayer.

Now AJ has to worry about self-preservation while also trying to save everyone he cares about from a real-life threat lurking in the shadows of Spoons Middle School.

I have been waiting for the opportunity to read Whitney Gardner and this was the perfect chance. Fake Blood is a middle grade graphic novel of sixth grade wrapped in the best Twilight puns that you’ll ever see. What happens when AJ falls head over heels for a girl but she can’t see him? Use a class project to get to know your shared interests and lean on them….unless you’re pretending to be a vampire and finding out your crush is a vampire slayer. Plan gone terribly wrong.

Middle school is all about testing who you are and solidifying your peer group, which Whitney Gardner explores in a way that will bring you right back to your sixth grade self. This is just about the CUTEST graphic novel ever, with stellar art and jokes all around. Perfect for fall!

On a Sunbeam

by Tillie Walden
Published by: First Second
on October 2, 2018

An epic graphic novel about a girl who travels to the ends of the universe to find a long lost love, from acclaimed author Tillie Walden.

Throughout the deepest reaches of space, a crew rebuilds beautiful and broken-down structures, painstakingly putting the past together. As Mia, the newest member, gets to know her team, the story flashes back to her pivotal year in boarding school, where she fell in love with a mysterious new student. When Mia grows close to her new friends, she reveals her true purpose for joining their ship—to track down her long-lost love.

An inventive world, a breathtaking love story, and stunning art come together in this new work by award-winning artist Tillie Walden.

Iceman has always been one of my favorite X-Men but in this version, Bobby is gay and taking a leadership role. He’s funny and reminds me a lot of Spider-Man. Looking forward to seeing where this goes!

HE'S BACK! Iceman is back! Which is good, because someone is hunting the Morlocks for sport. Now it’s up to Bobby Drake to prevent another potential Mutant Massacre. But who’s behind this horrific hunt? You won’t believe it if we tell you! Guest-starring Bishop!

What We Can’t Wait For

I’ve been reading Peter Parker – The Spectacular Spider-Man for a while now and jumped into the new Marvel Rising event that will soon feature Ghost Spider…So I am into Spider-Man. Enter Spider-Geddon, the upcoming Marvel event that’s going to unite all the Spider-Man iterations, including integrating the new video game Spider-Man (which I just bought and plan to play before the end of the year!). Also, I love Miles Morales and can’t wait to see him star in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
