Event Recap: FanX Denver
One of the first things I did in coming to Colorado was to look for local events. Cons, concerts, etc. Imagine my joy when I learned that Fan Expo, a popular fan convention, was scheduled the week after we moved here! FanX, as it’s referred to, is full of celebrities, comic artists, vendors, industry experts, and authors. I had the pleasure of attending several panels and meeting authors – and, of course, cosplaying!
One of the things I love about conventions is there’s something for everyone. Where else are you going to see Link holding hands with It? We attended book panels, celebrity panels, and even panels hosted by NASA. Fans can also submit panels (there was a Supernatural trivia panel!). This con has a convienent app to keep track of your schedule and is well labeled with signs to get you were you’re going. With it being Halloween weekend, cosplays were plentiful.
Check out a recap of two of the panels I attended along with some photos from the convention and info on how you can find a FanX convention near you!
PLEASE NOTE: At this time, Fan Expo Denver 2022 has announced Gina Carano as a guest. Gina is transphobic and anti-Semitic. We here at BookCrushin do not support this and will not attend Fan Expo with Gina on the roster.
Smallville Panel
Long before the Arrowverse came the world of young Clark Kent via Smallville. I watched Smallville from the day it started to the day it ended, so of course, I was thrilled to see Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum. Michael comes out singing and it’s clear from the start, these two are completely comfortable with each other – and their audience. They love being with us and dive straight into audience questions.
It’s been over 10 years since Smallville ended but with the energy in the room, you’d think it was still the Thursday night 9pm top contender. Everyone wants to know: Would they come back (without a question!)? What’s happening in the universe (an animated project coming this year)? What did Michael take from the set (suits and shot glasses)? We also learned that Tom had in his contract that he wouldn’t wear a cape and that Michael and Tom did not talk about who their characters were.
Colorado Book Panel
One of the things I love doing is connecting with local authors, especially those that weave the local history or geography. One of the benefit of local conventions is they often bring local authors together. FanX brought together local authors Mario Acevedo, David R. Slayton, L.V. Ditchkus, and Todd Fahnestock. Many of the stories by the authors are set or inspired by Colorado or Colorado events. They share how talking to locals inspires their stories and that setting stories in Colorado makes it easy to build a story.
Mario’s MC is from Colorado and wrote his story after hiking 450 miles during COVID. He also used to give ghost tours at the Stanley Hotel, stating how easy it is to feel lost and isolated in Colorado. Linda is inspired by small pieces of Colorado, like the flowers that bloom here. When she sets stories in her hometown, she vows to never allow bad things to happen. David’s urban fantasy embodies much of Denver’s unique history you can only hear from locals.
