Review: ReMade Episodes 1.1-1.3 by Matthew Cody, Andrea Phillips, Carrie Harris

ReMade season one is complete and with my recent discovery and love for the Geek Actually serial, I decided I needed more serial books in my life! So I am catching up on ReMade before season 2 releases on November 15th! So I will be reviewing ReMade season 1 episodes in small batches, since I don’t have to wait each week for a new episodes I have been bingeing them. Whoa! I am definitely hooked! Reading serialized fiction is super fun! The episodes are short enough for my commute and I am left eagerly awaiting the next. I’m lucky that this season is already complete as I start it because, man there are some nasty cliff hangers. The ones I have encountered already…would probably have me on baited breathe if I had to wait each week.

I have no idea what is going on, but I am so curious! Loving the mix of backstory and current events. We are introduced to Holden, a boy in his HS drama production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He seems to have joined in the ensemble just to be closer to his crush, and after the final performance he gets a chance to talk to her.

Seyah is popular and beautiful and the lead role in the play. After the performance she discovers her car won’t start and Holden happens to notice and offers her a ride to the cast party. This is when everything changes.

Holden awakes in an enclosed room, he had crazy nightmares and next thing he knows he is in some sort of bunker.  He makes his way out only to find Seyah screaming to run. They are in some serious danger in this foreign place.

It is hard to believe there are only 32 pages, because so much happens! I also want to know what Matthew Cody’s actual dreams look like when he crafted up this crazy sci-fi!

Hungry is right. We meet a whole lot more of the kids and we have no idea how they got to be in space. Most of the group are only worried about food and trying to come up with some sort of clue where they are and how they got here. Now that they are on the ground Holden, Seyah and Umta have to explain and relive the danger they were up against as the last ones out of the space station. These giant robotic spiders decided to rip one of the kids apart as they narrowly escaped onto the space elevator.

Yes, you heard me right! Space station, space elevators and killer robots. Plus, that isn’t even everything! Pretty positive all these kids died and are now REMADE!

This episode is a lot like first, we get current events, that pick up where ep1 left off, and this time May’s backstory. She was motivated, she studied hard, planned out her whole life and she still couldn’t have predicted that she would die out on a run after eating a granola bar. May is the most worried about food. She has severe anaphylaxis from food allergies and the protein bars from the space station have no label, actually no words of any kind. May doesn’t want to die…but she may starve to death if she doesn’t find something to eat.

Waking up in a strange and scary new world isn’t necessarily the worst thing, especially when you are grateful to wake up at all. When Nevaeh opened her eyes to find no hospital bed, IV drips, or cancer riddling her body she counted her blessings and sang for joy – happy to face the deadly jungle, killer robots, and (if she’s honest, perhaps the most disheartening) disgruntled companions. They say smiling is the best medicine, but does it still work after death?

Home, Perilous Home starts with Nevaeh’s back story, that she was slowly dying of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Wherever they are doesn’t matter, because to Nevaeh, it is heaven. She is alive, well, she has energy and can walk. She is kind and caring and will not miss her chance to be this new person. Whereas everyone else was completely freaked out as they all come to grips with the fact that they died and have no idea how or where or why they are here now, Nevaeh is happy to be anything but that ill child.

As much as I want answers about the hows and whys these selected teens (and Umta) are here (where?) at this point I truly am enjoying getting to know them all one by one. As well as who they are in the group, and it helps you understand each person’s driving motivation.

The explorations of the jungle around them have them wondering when and where are they! Animals are similar yet different. Vegetation and fruits and berries all are unidentifiable. How do they know what is safe and what is harmful. Hunted meat spoils fast and they need to forage but how can they when they don’t even know what anything is! Let alone what else is out there other than killer bunnies — like saber-toothed tigers!

Taking care of the injured is exactly what Nevaeh is good at, and she recruits Jing-Wei to help setting Cole’s broken leg. As new dangers arise, food and shelter are still not ideal, and Holden will not let them forget about the Caretakers who tore apart Thomas on the space station.

After 3 episodes I do not want to stop reading and I am pretty sure as I get farther into the story I have more questions than answers, but here we are knowing really next to nothing and I can’t wait to figure it out!
