No one wants me to tell you about the disappearance of Sloane Sullivan.
Not the lawyers or the cops. Not her friends or family. Not even the boy who loved her more than anyone. And most certainly not the United States Marshals Service. You know, the people who run the witness protection program or, as it’s officially called, the Witness Security Program? Yeah, the WITSEC folks definitely don’t want me talking to you.
But I don’t care. I have to tell someone.
If I don’t, you’ll never know how completely wrong things can go. How a single decision can change everything. How, when it really comes down to it, you can’t trust anyone. Not even yourself. You have to understand, so it won’t happen to you next. Because you never know when the person sitting next to you isn’t who they claim to be…and because there are worse things than disappearing.

The stars were always brightest after midnight. When the buildings went dark and the headlights disappeared from the highway and the sounds outside the open windows grew as quiet as the Kings of Leon song floating softly from the speakers, that’s when the stars really started to shine, little beacons guiding us to our next lives.
I leaned against the cool door and studied the sky. Looking up was good. Straight ahead, even better. But never back. It was the advice I’d been given the very first time I’d left a place, delivered in a gruff, tense voice: Don’t look back. I didn’t listen, of course. I watched everything I knew get smaller and smaller out the back window through tear-blurred eyes until I didn’t recognize anything anymore.
Now I knew better.
Back was places I could never set foot in again if I wanted to stay safe. People I had to forget if I was going to survive becoming someone else. I didn’t want to look back.
I propped my bare feet up on the dashboard, blue-painted toes tapping in tune to a song I’d heard a million times before. For once we didn’t have to leave in the middle of the night. But by some unspoken agreement, we did anyway. It was tradition, just like the wind whipping through my hair and the junk food wrappers littering the back seat and the oddly-comforting smell of grass and gasoline. But for the first time during one of our middle-of-the-night escapes, a smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. Because this time, all those miles of open road were leading to the last person I’d ever be. And once I was SLOANE Sullivan, there’d be no reason to look back ever again.
