An epic fantasy inspired by the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale, about a bastard princess who must take on an evil fae to save her brother’s soul, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen.

The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence that he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague, who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

Review:

[book rating=4/5]

The Wish Granter was a fun and adventurous retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale. I really tore through this book, and I loved the first book in the series, The Shadow Queen, but reading the first book is not a necessity in order to enjoy The Wish Granter. The books are set in the same world, but each focuses on a different Kingdom and characters.  I do love a good retelling and this one it up there with the bests. It takes just enough for a very creative and liberal retelling.

We are thrust right into the action and peril of Ari & her brother Thad, bastard twins of the King, whom remarried and had a rightful heir to the throne, which ultimately puts Ari & Thad’s lives in danger. They are out of options and after watching their mother die protecting them, Thad makes a wish with villainous fae the Wish Granter, to protect his sisters life, and in turn gives up his soul in 10 years. However, the Wish Grantor, Alastair Teague, had different motives and tricked Thad into wishing for the crown in order to save their lives.

Once Ari discovers Thad’s predicament, she sets herself to work on finding a loophole to free his soul from Teague. She finds an ally with the newly appointed royal weapons master, Sebastian, who knows the intimate dealings of Teague, as he has ruined Sebastian’s family as well. I loved their relationship, and even though the tortured backstory of Sebastian, made him hard to connect with at first, but I do love my heroes brooding and dark.

Ari doesn’t spin gold, but she does have a heart of gold. True and pure, she would do anything for those she cares for. She is a wonderful heroine, full of spunk and desire. She was raised as a servant in the royal household and has a penchant for baking and eating! Love that she isn’t a tiny, starved girl; she has curves and she doesn’t care what people think of her body, her sometimes foul mouth, and her non-princess like behavior.

The story really kicks off after Ari & Thad join in with Sebastian and others to try and twart Teague’s dangerous crew of thieves, thugs, and drugs to make the kingdom a better place, all the while trying to save Thad’s soul. There is a slow burn secondary romance, which worked (even though I wanted more!). There is non-stop action and the story is brilliantly told. 4 solid stars, I recommend this book for all fans of fantasy & especially magical retellings.

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman…and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

  1. I still need to read these, you know I’m a sucker for a good retelling! I like that you’re honest about what to expect, yet still enthusiastic. As always, I enjoyed reading this and these covers- sheesh they’re purty.
