I am thrilled to be a part of the blog tour and for today’s post I am going to share some of my favorite ship wrecked characters in popular culture! For the first time, I was afraid we’d die on this shore.

Favorite Ship Wrecked Characters in Popular Culture:

Ok so I have to start with Prince Eric from A Little Mermaid. Now I’m talking Disney, because, no I haven’t read any of the old fairy tales. Prince Eric just has something so damn lovable about him! Maybe its his love for his fluffy dog! I digress, his ship burns, he’s rescued by Ariel and the two fall instantly in love. Perfect. Except it isn’t that easy…we all know the story!

Rose DeWitt Bukater, a fictional character on the very factual, yet unsinkable Titanic. Which, of course sank after hitting an iceberg. After the captain ignored all the surrounding iceberg warnings, of course, because ego. Rose is such a likable heroine. She believes her fate is sealed to marry a wealthy scumbag, and when she thinks she can escape him, she ends up falling in love with a poor boy, who lives his life to the fullest. Spoiler alert, she lives, he dies, but she never wastes another day in her life, she grabs her fate by the horns and sets her own course.

Oliver Queen, was a wealthy playboy, breaking hearts faster than he could spend his money. Until he was ship wrecked when his yacht was destroyed in a storm. The Arrow TV show, started out so amazing. I was glued to my TV, and the parts I loved the most where the parts where Oliver was stranded on the island and learning to survive. Of course he learned a whole lot more, like how to be an amazing assassin.

Cast Away is one of those movies that stands out the most for me, as far as deserted islands go. Chuck Noland survives a plane crash and now must survive so much more. I love this movie, for many reasons, but also how much it highlights what we as humans are capable of in order to survive. Plus Tom Hanks, barely utters a word once on the island and I still can get the entire sense of his emotions and what he is going through. Brilliant movie. “WILSON!”

Gilligan’s Island is another one of those extremely famous ship wrecked TV shows. This one being more comedy than survival, but it still has a huge place in pop culture and my youth. I used to devour the reruns of this show as a tween. It was so funny. Gilligan was the dunce, the comedic relief and I thought he was more brilliant than dumb.

As far as TV shows another one I was hopelessly devoted to was Lost. A plane crashes on an island and a lot of people survive. Clearly Jack was a favorite character, but I also loved Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley. I loved getting the back stories, as well as the craziness that was involved with survival. Then there are so many explainable events. I mean I can’t even get into it all because it would be like writing a 100,000 word thesis paper! But I was glued to my TV, week after week. Nothing was too crazy. Theories were constantly being discussed and as much as I was disappointed in the ending, the show still holds mysteries that were never answered!

Life of Pi is one of those books I always wanted to read, then I saw the movie and was just blown away. I still haven’t read the book but the movie really captured my imagination and definitely makes you think about what life would be like. Pi was such a thrilling story teller, so much so that you as the reader have no idea which story is true. Do our minds create a reality in order to survive, or did this boy really share a life boat with a tiger?!

Lord of the Flies was a book I read back in, maybe, 6th grade. It was very much shocking to me still to this day, as what might happen when a bunch of children are stranded on a deserted island. This book screwed with my head a young impressionable person. I couldn’t understand why they couldn’t just work together, they had to be dependent on one another in order to survive, but instead it was mostly a story about the struggle of power during the time of war. Like really what does war teach our youth?

So, those are my favorite ship wrecked stories in popular culture! I am sure there are a ton more, so tell me which do you love?
