Guest Post & Giveaway: Episodes of Supernatural & Buffy to Watch if You Love Jennifer Strange with Cat Scully
When I saw the terrifying illustrations in Jennifer Strange, I KNEW I was all in. As a fan of most things horror and paranormal, knowing there would be familiar terrifying horror creatures was an easy sell – and immediately reminded me of Supernatural meets Buffy. I asked Cat to share what episodes of Supernatural and Buffy she recommends if you love Jennifer Strange (and if you love these eps, be sure to pick up Jennifer Strange, out July 21st!).

Jennifer Strange is cursed with the ability to give ghosts and demons a corporeal body with just the touch of her hand. All she wants is to learn how to control her new gift. Instead, her father drops her in the care of her older sister Liz, leaving only his journal as an explanation.
Jennifer and Liz haven’t spoken to each other since their mother died, but when the supernatural residents of Savannah, Georgia find Jennifer and her powerful gift, the sisters must learn to trust each other again and uncover the truth about their parents. If they can’t sort out their differences, they’ll not only destroy the veil between the living and the dead but fall into the hands of a rival family who wants to claim the Sparrow power for themselves.
JENNIFER STRANGE is an illustrated novel - a campy romp for fans of BUFFY, EVIL DEAD, and SUPERNATURAL. Cat's illustrations unveil the story of Jennifer's family history in the form of a journal with an art style akin to SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK.
Episodes of Supernatural & Buffy to Watch if You Love Jennifer Strange
Buffy s02e19 – I Only Have Eyes for You
This is pretty much the perfect Jennifer Strange episode. There are ghosts possession the school playing out how they died, a reference to a poltergeist, a rose quartz necklace like Jennifer’s makes an appearance, and there’s a vague mention of Buffy seeing a “Black Gate” by Drusilla. Spike and Angel have always been an inspiration for Marcus so this episode is pretty much perfect if you’re a Jennifer Strange fan!
Supernatural s01e01 – Pilot
The introduction to Supernatural is the introduction to Winchester brothers and their slogan – “Saving people, hunting things. The family business.” Jennifer Strange features the same vibes, both in the bond between Jennifer and her sister, Liz, but also in the familial history. There may also be a fatherly journal ;).
Buffy s2e22 – Becoming (Part 1)
Check out this episode involving Angel’s past for a huge Jennifer Strange influence. In this episode, we see Angel watch a young Buffy be appointed as the Slayer by her Watcher. She fights her first vampire clumsily and Angel decides to help her, and this episode is the essence of Jennifer and Marcus’s relationship and a look at what is to come for them in book two of Jennifer Strange.
Supernatural s01e12 – Faith
I was getting major Faith vibes from the Blackwell family. The whole time, I was highly suspicious of the Blackwells, just as I was of the preacher in Faith!
Supernatural s03e10 – Dream a Little Dream of Me
Bela’s relationship to the Winchesters reminds me of Marcus in Jennifer Strange. Some people do bad things for good reasons – and suffer for them.
Buffy s4e10 – Hush
This episode is a definite pick for Jennifer Strange fans because it is arguably the most terrifying. The fairy story meets horror style of the episode, an intersection between horror and fantasy genres, was a huge inspiration for the ghosts and demons of Jennifer Strange where the monsters feel nestled between fear and fantasy.
Buffy s6e3 – Afterlife
Buffy’s return from the grave in equivalent exchange for a curse that stalks the conjurers feels VERY Jennifer Strange. Magic giving and taking in equal and opposite reaction, what is resurrected must have a consequence, is very much in line with how every time Jennifer resurrects a ghost, a bit of her is pulled over to the other side in the form of a gold mark.
