If you had the power to envision your death, how would you live your life?
I love thinking about this, because it’s sort of the central question of THE WISE AND THE WICKED: how would you write the story of your life, if you already knew the ending?
Life is made up of so many moments, finite but practically infinite, and they can’t all be erased by the last one. I believe that a story, even a short one, still means something even after it’s ended. So, whether I was going to die at 90 on the back of a camel while climbing sand dunes in the Gobi Desert, or, as Ruby fears, my death would be much sooner and smaller, I hope that I would still honor every choice I got to make in the meantime. That I would try adventurous flavors of ice cream, and spend rainy days in my bedroom with my favorite books, and cold winter nights around a backyard bonfire with somebody who meant something to me. That I would do right as often as possible, and change the world in whatever little ways I could, and love people as completely as I was able. I think I spent a whole book writing toward that idea, but one of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver, gets it done in four lines:
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
