This modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing takes place at the idyllic Camp Dogberry, where sisters Bee and Hana Leonato have grown up. Their parents own the place, and every summer they look forward to leading little campers in crafts, swimming in the lake, playing games of capture the flag and sproutball, and of course, the legendary counselor parties.

This year, the camp drama isn’t just on the improv stage. Bee and longtime counselor Ben have a will-they-or-won’t-they romance that’s complicated by events that happened—or didn’t happen—last summer. Meanwhile, Hana is falling hard for the kind but insecure Claudia, putting them both in the crosshairs of resident troublemaker John, who spreads a vicious rumor that could tear them apart.

As the counselors juggle their camp responsibilities with simmering drama that comes to a head at the Fourth of July sparkler party, they’ll have to swallow their pride and find the courage to untangle the truth, whether it leads to heartbreak or happily ever after.

Summer Camp Survival – What Teens Should Know – Molly Booth

I went to summer camp growing up, and eventually worked as a counselor and an activity leader. I used so much of my experiences for writing NOTHING HAPPENED, so I thought I’d let my characters tell you their best ideas.

Summer Camp Survival Tips from NOTHING HAPPENED’s Camp Dogberry Staff

Bee:
● Fill out any required paperwork ASAP. (Remember: paperwork is fun!!) And go ahead and talk to your boss if you have any questions.
● Try to muster excitement for all activities! Your campers will follow your lead, and it’s way easier to work with enthusiastic campers.
● Do not get up before the sun rises. It is NOT natural.
● Be on time for everything. It’s your job, BEN.

Hana:
● Use sunscreen every day! And re-apply after swimming. One year, Margo got so burned we had to take her to Kangaroo Court. Don’t be Margo (Margo, we love you<3).
● If you hear gossip and rumors floating around camp, don’t believe everything you hear, and don’t help spread them around.
● Practice patience with the little kids and with the kids who feel little when they’re homesick.
● Be careful where you kiss other counselors. Like, don’t kiss anyone during broad daylight or during a camp activity, even if you’re feeling it. Not speaking from experience here at all. At all.

Claudia:
● Trust the people who are closest to you.
● If you have a problem with someone, talk it out.
● Ask to lead activities you actually like. I like making knots. So, I help kids learn to tie knots. It’s great. I enjoy it. Everyone’s quiet, and we tie all sorts of cool knots. Yeah. Knots.
● If you like someone and they like you, try not to worry about what other people think. Easier said than done. Pretty much.

Ben:
● Get to know your fellow CITs, counselors, and staff members – we all have to rely on and support each other.
● Pack extra pants. Make sure to pack any pants at all, actually.
● Do not make boating a required activity for anyone.
● If you have a crush another counselor, that’s fine, just please don’t tell me.

Margo:
● Try out a really wild hair color. You’re here for the whole summer, away from all your regular friends and school, so you might as well do something daring and fabulous!
● Make your summer about friendships. They’re just as important as your crushes.
● Your CITs are super helpful, and they do so much for you. Care about them too! Sneak them snacks and teach them what you know.
● When you need a moment alone but you don’t want to FEEL alone, hang out with the goats. They’re great, non-judgemental listeners. As long as you feed them, anyway.

In high school, she was a stage manager for three different community theatres, which almost killed her. She graduated from Marlboro College and went onto study more Shakespeare (twist!) at University of Massachusetts Boston.
